Help us pick a $75 or less/night...place to stay for one night in the Wicker Park/ Bucktown area. Will be tooling around, thrift shopping and sight seeing during the day...before moving onto Union Pier, MI for a 2 night anniversary stay.

Sorry, but you're in the wrong neighborhoods for that price. Wicker Park/Bucktown have B&Bs and I know of an inn there, but they're a lot higher than that per night (I think the least I've seen is around $125-150 per night plus tax, but it depends on availability.)
You might possibly get someplace on the Magnificent Mile/River North/Loop/Grant Park, etc. through Hotwire or Priceline for that amount (plus the 15.50% city tax and additional fees), but that would depend on the properties available when you are traveling.
The only other option would be a hostel. There are a couple in other neighborhoods (the Loop and Lincoln Park spring to mind) where I know a couple are located, but I'm not certain there are any in Wicker Park/Bucktown.
By the way, why did you choose to stay in Wicker Park/Bucktown?

We did find a Bellwood Hotel that is $50/night...you can't make reservations though. Is Wicker Park area fairly safe..or do you think this might be a "rent a room per night" thing? We don't have to stay in this area- just thought it loooked fun... Any other suggestions are welcome. We've already done the whole stay downtown, so thought we'd try something different.

Wicker Park is a great area- tons of funky shoppong, restaurants, bars, etc. It has a very urban feel, but it is pretty safe (I live there). However, accomodations are limited to a couple of inns/b&bs that I doubt will fit into your price range...
