One again I am taking students on a work trip for a week and looking to the locals for help.
Our group will work Sunday to Saturday in Detroit in June. We're looking to see some interesting places in Detroit on Saturday & Sunday before heading back. How is Greenfield Village? Henry Ford tour even though no trucks are made on weekends? Any really interesting museums? Thanks!

Greenfield Village will appeal go kids. It is an all day thing, especially if you do the Village and the Museum.

The other suggestion is the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak. They have a nice polar bear exhibit.

There is also the Detroit Science Center and IMAX theatre. Hope this helps. Feel free to let me know if you have further questions.

Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum are both very good. I first visited them when I was 17 and enjoyed them a lot.

If you go downtown, stop for chilidogs & fries at Lafayette and American Coney Island. These restuarants are side by side and were opened by Greek brothers in 1917. One is still in the original family.

It is step back in time. Lafayette's appliances and counters look like they are at least 50 years old. Both restaurants' cash registers could be original.

Your students might get excited about a trip to another county. How about a visit to Windsor - maybe giving them a little time to shop?

While in Ontario, take a drive (less than 35 miles) down to Pointe Pelee National Park & the Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary. Pointe Pelee is the southern most point in mainland Canada and has beaches, a marsh boardwalk, hiking trails and an interpretative center.

The drive through Leamington on way to the park is interesting. There are over 200 acres of greenhouses.

Of lesser interet is Colasanti's Tropical Greenhouses with gardens, aligators, large cats, minature animals, reptiles and tropical birds.

As a side bar...lafayette and American Coney Island are owned by the same people. Just different names. Coney Islands ARE the best......

Think about a baseball game. Comerica Park, the still fairly new home of the Tigers gives a nice view of downtown even if the team is in its 20 year of rebuilding.

Also, a hot new tour is of the Rouge Plant just outside of Detroit. The Rouge Plant was a hub of the WW II defense program and still is a key part of Ford. I believe there is a web site for this tour but could not find it at rougeplant.com but try some of the tourist info for Detroit. I know that tours last year were a hot ticket. Didn't go myself (no longer live in Michigan) but had family go who found this different and very interesting.
