I will be exploring the south and north forks of long island this coming wednesday. I am looking forwarding to having some raw shellfish fresh from the sea for lunch and also buying some seafood from fishermen to bring home. Are there such places? Any place in long island?

Try the dock at Three Mile Harbor. Going east out of East Hampton, take the left fork at the windmill. Not too far after you go under the LIRR trestle, the road forks again. Take the left fork toward Three Mile Harbor. It will be about seven to ten miles. Yhe other option would be places on 27 going to Montauk.

On the North Fork, look for Alice's Fish Market at 222 Atlantic Avenue in Greenport. It's a short drive from the Shelter Island Ferry. Look for the signs to it or ask directions.

Any place in Montauk....On the way on Napeak Stretch (the narrowest section of long island) Theres a litle shack that just says "LUNCH" it will be on your left as you are going to Montauk (its about 15 min from Montauk) Great food, and a landmark! Don't forget Lobster Roll Theres also Gosman's Dock in Montauk and the lobster farm for buying fresh seafood and The Dock. You can go down to the boat docks. If you want to feel like an "old salt" go to Salivars. You will hear fishing stories, eat great simple food. Another great place is the Surfside Inn - one of my favorite places.
There are plenty of places in Montauk to eat and buy seafood...actually most of them!
On the to Montauk, you have to go thru the Hamptons, make sure to stop in the Amagansett Farmers Market for great stuff - "world famous"!

I'm more familiar with the south fork. For both dining & purchasing to take home, Duryea's in Montauk is terrific. It's not in the main dock area, but on Tuthill Road. The link below should show a map.

They have a retail & wholesale operation. The restaurant is "serve yourself", outside on the water (hope the hurricane doesn't ruin your plans!)

I do like the Surfside in Montauk that Sandyfeet mentions for a good casual seafood meal. For a more upscale meal try Dave's Grill (davesgrill.com)

Logistically, it might work better to stop on your way home for "take home" in Hampton Bays. At this website, you'll find the addresses for fish markets in Hampton Bays. In my experience, they're the best for fish (have not tried shellfish from them). The 2 most well know are Cour J's & Tully's.

While LUNCH aka the Lobster Roll that SandyFeet mentions is a landmark, IMO it's better for fried shellfish & lobster salad (the lobster roll) than raw stuff.
