Can your MIL adopt me? I promise to play nice with my new siblings.

Thanks to everyone for their advice, especially Allan! I will certainly try that because these french keyboards are difficult.

Since you're going around Christmas, you may want to check out Chumley's. It's a cozy, little bar/restaurant that oozes of holiday spirit. Located in the village on the corner of Bedford and Barrow, a few blocks from the Christopher Street PATH station in the Village. There aren't any signs for the place and the main entrance is in an apartment building courtyard - adds to the charm, makes it feel like you're going over to see freinds.

As to the Paramount:

So, so hip, trendy, wild modernist decor, beautiful doormen(boys) lobby a scene.

The rooms are the SMALLEST I"VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!! Literally not room for two people to pass.

babette, stay at the St. Regis. While I love all of the hotels mentioned above (and the Ritz-Carlton CPS and the Regent Wall Street), no other hotel can compare with the St. Regis.

The Sofitel is located on the same block as the Iroquois, etc. We love that location in the winter weather. Fifth Ave on one side, Times Square on the other, short walk to Rockefeller Center. We love the restaurant/bar at the Sofitel and the international staff.

Another fine hotel to check out is the Peninsula. And, no one has mentioned the Essex?

Here's another recommendation for Barney's and Saks. But, you will definitely want to walk her north on Madison Ave (chock full of French bistros and other things French) starting at Barney's.

For drinks, head for Rainbow GRILL (not Room). Best time to go is between showtime and shows over time.

A Circle Line Harborlights cruise is an outstanding way to see the skyline, and it goes RIGHT past the Statue of Liberty.

Is your mother in law looking for a nice, adoptive daughter? I'll be on my best behavior. Can she take me back to France?

Okay, I think we'll go with the Four Seasons. Thanks for all the great hotel suggestions. (It was really hard to choose just ONE!)

Now, where do I find a listing of broadway shows in December?

Babette - The choice of the Four Seasons Hotel is, "superb." I spent two nights there before my wedding right after the hotel opened - it was terrific. Let me please recommend a restaurant to go along with that quality of hotel.

Take your MIL to an early dinner (5:00 or 6:00)at the front room at the Gramercy Tavern. During the holidays, the room is impeccably decorated and extremely festive, as is the menu. It is a very New York scene - much more sophisticated than that tourist trap restaurant in Central Park - with wonderful wines by the glass and delicious dishes that reflect the bounty of the season. The front room takes no reservations (the large, expensive restaurant in the back does take reservations) and can get very crowded after 6:00. But now that there is (thankfully) no smoking in bars - the front is even more welcoming to most people. A holiday meal at the front room at GT has become a holiday tradtion for my family since the restaurant opened. I hope you can enjoy it too.

You may want to also consider the Rockettes holiday show at Radio City. We got same day tickets a few years back and really liked it (more than we thought we would) Man, can those girls kick!
