Carmella,
By no means is this a bad area, however, it's not the best either. In Santa Monica, you will either pay a high amount to stay on/by the beach (Lowe's, Shutters, Casa Del Mar, etc) or you'll be in a location not unlike where the 4 Points is. The problem with the 4 points is it's kind of in no man's land between Main St. and the 3rd Street area-- all are walkable, but neither are what I'd call "next door."
There is a holiday Inn on Colorado Ave. that is very close to 3rd Street. The area is more active then where the 4 points is. It's probably not as nice as the 4 points, but it depends on what's more important to you. Bottom line is that I don't think you should have much of a problem at the 4 points.

We stayed there last yr, on a 2 nt stay via Priceline. It was a great hotel, an older property that's been totally renovated. Rooms have new furniture, hallways are all renovated, and the lobby is open with fountains and plants. There's an excercise rm., and a small pool and sunning deck off the rear of the main lobby, nnear the bar. It is a very safe area, and near all of the attractions of Santa Monica. My whole family had a nice time at the hotel. Enjoy your stay

Carmella,
Just got back Wednesday, from visiting my parents in Santa Monica (among many other things we did). We stayed at the Four Points LAX for nights. The Santa Monica Four Points that we saw when driving around, was across the street from the Santa Monica High School. There was scaffolding all around the high school so obviously they are doing some type of construction. If you can, try & get a room facing away from the High School so the construction won't bother you.

I was not impressed a year ago. The parking in particular is very clumsy with lots of double spaces so you have to leave keys with the valet and then chase him down in the morning since nobody can ever find him. Look at the BW Ocean View. Also the little rather funky Hotel California.Expect Santa Monica to have its share of homeless people and remember you're in a city and you'll be fine.
