Fort Myers/Pine Island KOA?

Hi, everyone, we have to take a quick trip down to Fort Myers in early March (3 night stay). We also have to bring our two dogs and we don't want to spend a fortune. The only place that seems to fit our needs is the Fort Myers/Pine Island KOA. Any thoughts on the place? Has anyone ever seen it? Do you have other suggestions? I've looked everywhere and the lowest rates at even 1 star hotels are $130 (and they normally don't accept pets, let alone two big dogs). I could priceline it and get a better deal, but again, no dogs allowed. The KOA Kamping Kabins are $60/night and 2 dogs are allowed.

Hi There,
My husband and I were in Pine Island last March and I was not impressed. Although a lot of damage from the hurricane was going on and the golf course was in horrible condition. I would stick to Fort Myers. Much more to do. Good Luck

Sandy, thanks for the reply. We actually are not going for a vacation - we have some business in the area and just need a place to stay. I checked on mapquest and the KOA is about 20 miles from downtown Ft. Myers. Oh well, at this point, our time is less valuable than our money -- that is, I'd rather pay less and have to drive the 20 miles each way. Plus, I simply couldn't find any other place that would let me bring my 2 big dogs, and since our usual petsitter is not available, I don't even know who would look after them. So it looks like we are sort of stuck with the KOA.

In terms of hurricane damage, hopefully they've made progress in the clean-up and rebuilding in the year since you visited.

I guess we are stuck with the KOA unless anyone else has ideas on a cheap place to crash with 2 big dogs! I'll report back after our stay.

LaQuintas and Motel 6s allow dogs. There's a LQ in Fort Myers. www.lq.com

I checked, and Motel 6 only allows 1 dog per room. The La Quinta in Fort Myers is $200 PER NIGHT for our dates. Ack! We are paying $57/night I believe at the KOA.

Thanks for the tips though!

Birder--I understand wanting to save money over time--but just to warn you--I have friends in Cape Coral and it takes me over 20 minutes just to get to there home from Pine Island and that is not even from the Island, just the beginning of it and in March the traffic may be bad, so understand 20 miles could easily take you an hour.

SiestaLinda,

Can I ask you about driving from Cape Coral? We are staying in a B & B and are planning a few day trips to Captiva/Sanibel and to the Edison museum. How long to you think our drives will be? Our last day we are heading to Corkscrew Swamp, before staying in Naples. Do you how long that drive might take? Many thanks!

Connette--are you staying at a B&B in Cape Coral? And if so where? Time driving really depends on where. Cape Coral is on the River but to go to Sanibel you have to go kind of back up to the Hwy and then cross the bridge and then go back down again to Sanibel. Also depends on what month. Also depends on the day, weekends are worse to get to Ft. Myers Beach or Sanibel. Sorry I need more info.

Thanks and here is more info:
It is actually located in Matlacha. Actual address is: 12251 Shoreview Drive. We are there Sat-Mon nights, heading to Naples on a Tue. Yep, the weekend. Early March too. Any tips? I really appreciate your insight!

I live in the NW corner of Cape Coral it takes us about 45 to reach the causeway to Sanibel. But depending on where in the Cape you will be you could probably shave 20-25 minutes.
