For those who think visiting Death Valley in Summer is a good idea . . .

Yes there is a heat wave this week. Temperatures are higher than normal, all over California.
And yes there IS a period of humidity in the desert..July and August. There are sometimes impressive thunderstorms in Death Valley in the summer.
For a more knowledgeable poster on Death Valley than janisj, try Trip Advisor. Frisco Road Runner is the expert, and there are a few others. In fact they are also discussing the heat wave.

why the snark? Where did I claim to be an 'expert.' on Death Valley??? Jeeze louise
BTW - my explanation about higher temps / lower humidity were not about Death Valley but about northern CA as my post says . . .

I like TA, but hate their discussion board.
It hit 120 here in Oklahoma two years ago and I work outside(sanitation collection) and it is a lot more humid here. So far, we've only had 1 day at 100 this year and the entire next week is highs of 88 and lows of 60 at night. This is unusual for us at this time of year. I'll enjoy it while I have the chance. It would be interesting to feel 130 at DV, but I don't think I'll be going anytime soon. We did really enjoy DV in the winter.

After 30 years of the "dry" heat of the Mojave Desert, I can tell you that after 110 it doesn't make much difference how hot it gets. It was 116 with 8% humidity yesterday. Today it's just 104 says the Weather Channel, but 15% humidity and it seems just as hot as the "drier" 116.

This report on NPR last night made me think of this thread.

Apparently July is Death Valley's busiest month. I just can't imagine doing that!

How about the Badwater ultramarathon that starts on Monday?
135 miles running from Badwater, Death Valley to Mt Whitney.
I have friends heading out there now to crew the race, and know some runners who have completed it.
UGH.

I drove through last week and it was 117* at 4 pm... around 104 at midnight when we frove through the other way. I am continually amazed at people who have no idea of what those temperatures are like and think they are going to sit out at a pool comfortably.
While I am venting, I am also going to scream if someone suggests taking Amtrak again as part of a California trip! A car is needed to see most of CA... that's all there is to it! Amtrak is fun for certain things but not if you actually want to see the coast of California and explore it!
janisj: I feel your pain.
