Are you talking about the Museum of the City of New York (5th ave and 105th street) or possibly the New-York Historical Society (CPW and 76th) ?.
Where did you hear about this?
Both are actually little undervisited gems of museums, and the Museum of the City of NY is great for kids (collections of doll houses, toys, etc). It's also always by "suggested donation" rather than fixed entrance fee so it's an economical place to visit any time

Of course this is just one of the great things about New York is that on any given day you can find the hidden little freebies that are well worth the time. I also suggest that anyone who is visiting and has a Saturday afternoon to kill head on down to Washington Square Park and watch some of the street performers. Some great entertainment can be found as long as you put money in the bucket.
