This reminds me of all the snacks we brought to Egypt with us last year - I don't really know what we were thinking (or not thinking!), since it would be logical to assume that since Egyptians eat, there is food in their country. We were worried our kids would starve when faced with unusual food.

As it turned out, the last few days we were bartering peanut butter, crackers, rice cakes, granola bars for Egyptian trinkets so we did not have to haul all that food home. Our kids gave the candy to Egyptian school kids.

Since I doubt you can barter food items in New York, I am with those that say shop when you get there, but bring something to eat on the plane.

Just back from NYC.
Jet Blue does not serve food-so BEFORE we got to airport we bought a sandwich at our local deli, plus fruit and 2 muffins, Airline serves drinks at no charge-except for alcohol or wine.
After we checked in at hotel, we found a Reade store and got juice,
canned drinks, milk and cereal.
Right outside hotel was a vendor that had coffee AND donut every AM for $1.00---what a bargain!!!
There are lots of food places at Grand Central while not cheap are very interesting!!! While there you MUST have Grand Cental Clam Chowder....wonderful
Despite what one poster wrote about grocery stores in NYC..We were all over Manhatten for 6 days and never did see a grocery store.
The closest to a grocery store was a great deli-grocery- fruit- baked goods-coffee bar place on 6th Ave btween 55 th and 56th-called Kleins.
Also, one floor down in Rockerfeller Center is a Starbucks and lots of "sandwich" lunch type places ,also entrance to the subvway..
Hope the weather is good for you..We hit it lucky no day over 80 while we were there.
Have fun...
PS Staten Island Ferry is free and gives a great view of the Statue of Liberty.

Practically every deli you came across, including the one you mention, is, in effect, a "grocery" store. They have canned foods, breads, cereal, milk, dairy products and even cleaning supplies.
