How long will you be in the area, and how close to Tampa are you looking at staying?
Citrus County, which is about 90 miles north of Tampa, has several very large lakes. They are known as the Lake Tsala Apopka chain.
In the Floral City area (which is the southeastern side of the county) there is a place on the lake that rents cabins. Website is www.moonriseresort.com- they also offer boat rentals.
Don't know if that is something you would be interested in, but check it out.
If not, give a few more details and possibly others could find a better match for you.

Staying for a week. Spending a couple of days with freinds in Tampa. Then going some where to rent a cottage on a lake. And rent a fishing boat. And catch fish. also see the sights around there. Sounds like alot in a week.

I had forwarded your question to a friend in Tampa who fishes. The response I got was: "there is no freshwater fishing in the Tampa Bay area that we know of. He would be better to fly into Orlando area - Lake Kissimmee is a big fresh water fishing lake and if he already has flights to Tampa - maybe drive over to the Winter Haven area - about 1 hour east of Tampa - all fresh water fishing is center state."

I live in Tampa and I agree with the above posting, there is no fresh water fishing in Tampa. Brooksville is about as close as you'll get but be ready for a drive into Tampa.
