Flightseeing in Alaska

I am visiting Alaska in early September. Where is the best flight seeing? I would like to see glaciers, etc. Anyone have any recommendations?

We had a wonderful flightseeing trip in May from Talkeetna, right up close to Mt McKinley, with a glacier landing. About 2 hours in total, approx. 2 hours, just under $200 a head, worth every cent! Definitely worth paying a bit extra for the landing. We flew with K2 Aviation, they were excellent. Their website is www.flyk2.com. There were several other flightseeing companies based at Talkeetna Airport.

You do have to go on a good day - it would be a waste of money otherwise and if it's bad they don't go. We just turned up and got on a flight in May. Probably September would be similarly uncrowded. The K2 brochure quotes rates valid from 1 May - 15 September - they may not go after that date.

We went on Talkeetna Air Taxi , www.talkeetnaair.com/. They have many choices, but take the longest..

I am not sure what was more spectacular on our flight: Denali/McKinley, the glaciers or the wildlife we saw on the way back to the airport. I'd recommend them. But I suspect they are all good. Talkeetna was very, very flexable with our schedule. We called day before and they waited until we got there...

As far as where is the best... I don't know, but I regret not taking a flightseeing tour (another one) while we were near Wrangall St. Elias (near Glennallen, AK) area or the Kluane area in the Yukon.

Well, I live in Talkeetna, and yes it is where you need to go to see the mountains and glaciers. It is absolutely beautiful. I have to suggest you fly with Talkeetna Aero, they have some excellent twin engine luxurious planes. You’ll be looking at $180 per head for a flight over the top of Mount McKinley. Or Just $100 for a simpler flight, but its worth the extra cash for the big trip. My best friends parents run the business. You can tell them that Joe Kluberton referred you there and they will give you a $10 dollar discount. I hope you have wonderful weather for your trip and I wish you great travels.

I went to the McCarthy/Kennicott area and flew with Wrangell Mountain Air. The flightseeing was spectacular. It is a beautiful area and much less crowded than some of the other touristy spots. Be sure and ask for Jason as your pilot, he was ours and I heard he is the best.

Just back from Alaska. Had a great flightseeing tour in Wrangell/St Elias National Park -- the largest national park with 6 of the 10 highest peaks in the US and a glacier larger than the state of Rhode Island. Took a 90 minute trip with Jason of Wrangell Mountain Air out of McCarthy -- it was terrific to see such varied terrain and vistas. Highly recommended.

My wife and I did flightseeing from McCarthy with Wrangell Mountain Air. Very friendly people. We had a beautiful day and were able to get some great photographs. The glaciers are astounding and definitely one of the highlights of our trip. I believe Jason was our pilot too. Nice young man who knows alot about the glaciers and the area.

I recently returned from a great vacation in Alaska. The flightseeing was definitely one of the highlights, we flew with Jason from Chitina to McCarthy and then did a glacier tour with him. Not only is he a great pilot he is cute too. I too have heard it makes all the difference depending on the weather. I don't think it would be worth it to pay for the tour on a cloudy/overcast day.

Flightseeing is definitely the way to go. I have gone a few times and pretty much any where you go will be spectacular. Just be sure and go on a clear day for better views and picture taking. If you have a good day, do it. It can turn cloudy/rainy pretty quick.
