Phillyfly,

You may wish to consider reposting this with a little more info in the title. While it's clear what places you are inquiring about, nothing else is.

Perhaps something like the first sentence of your actual posting would work: "Looking to relocate to FL, NC or SC: Your thoughts?"

Good luck.

I admit my bias right up front. My wife & I relocated to Myrtle Beach 4 years ago because we wanted to be near the beach. We love it (we had been vacationing from our various homes in NC since we were children).

Beach, boating, golf--you've got a lot of all three here. The local college is Coastal Carolina University.

One caveat, though. If you are concerned about development, that is a major issue in the MB area. There is a lot of growth; although local leaders have recognized that and are trying to deal with it rather than ignore it.

That said, we love Charleston (although it costs a fortune to live in the beautiful historic district), and we love lots of places in NC. One possibility you may want to consider is Wilmington NC, a great small city near the coast.

I would also recommend the Wilmington, NC area. Enough of a town to have some culture but not a big city. plenty of golf & great weather (except for hurricane season). I'm not a big MB fan & won't even drive through that mess. Are you looking to be 'in town' ? As there are plenty of islands I would consider as well. Amelia Island is also another favorite of mine, close to Jacksonville, etc. but doesn't really fit your criteria.

GoTravel is the guru on Pawley's Island and Georgetown.

May I, however, suggest McClellanville just north of Mt. Pleasant? Absolutely delightful, although not a true beach, but perfect for boating etc. I believe your concerns about encroaching development would be calmed there. Or, my favorite place in the area, Edisto Island - which has everything you want (but pretty hefty price tags on real estate). Both are close enough to Charleston with employment opportunities if necessary.

SAnParis,

I guess it depends on your perspective. If you drive down Business 17 through MB, a lot of it just looks cluttered, commercial, and--well--ugly. But doesn't every town have that kind of road? Would you define other towns, including Wilmington, by their ugly road?

I woke up this morning at 6:30, looked at the tidal marsh outside our front windows to see the usual egrets, herons, and other water birds getting a little breakfast. Walked outside to start my morning run, past lots of palemtto trees, oaks, pines, bushes, all lush this time of year. Turned toward the beach (approx. 1/3 mile down the road), felt that rush of inspiration and calm I always get seeing the ocean after cresting a slight hill. I then proceeded to take in a beautiful sunrise over the wide flat beach, smell the ocean on a strong breeze, and returned to the calm peaceful morning our neighborhood always seems to enjoy.

I feel lucky to live in this *mess*
