First Visit to NYC

Hi! I will be traveling in August with my sisters and our close friend to NYC and I was wondering if anyone could suggest what we can do while we are there. We will be attending a Broadway show one night but need other things to do throughout the day. We would also like to eat somewhere fairly nice(but not too expensive) before the show. And of course please include shopping tips!

Thanks!

Red, if you haven't already done this, start by doing a search on NYC on this board. Also, get a good NYC Guide for first time visitors. Your question is a little broad because we don't know your hobbies, likes, type of food you want, price range, etc. Are you into museums? What kind of shopping?

Another obvious question to ask: Where are you coming from? New York City is such a huge town, with so much to do, it would be helpful to know your starting point so we can suggest stuff that you won't see back home.

You might start by taking a grayline double decker bus tour to get an overview of the city.

There are SO many things to do in New York. If you want museums, there is the Met, which is huge but always has something interesting. The website for the Met is metmuseum.org. It is very useful for seeing what new exhibits are on and opening times. The Met is open late on Fridays, and that is a fun and somewhat less crowded time to go.

One of my favourite small museums is:

Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum
2 East 91st Street
ndm.si.edu

This is uptown off Fifth Ave and not far from the Met. It is a small museum the has unusual rather advent garde exhibits. You can usually see the entire exhibit in about an hour.

The Guggenheim is between the Cooper Hewitt and the Met and is also usually worth a visit. (89th and 5th) Check their website to see what special events are on guggenheim.org/new_york

Don't' forget about the American Museum of Natural History museum on the other side of the park at 79th street. If you want to be outdoors, all of Central Park is great for a walk. The Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn are amazing and worth the trip, esp. as you will be there in June when so much will be blooming. Check their website at bbg.org

A UN tour might be fun. English tours begin every 15 - 30 minutes daily, between 9:15am - 4:45pm on Monday through Friday,. Saturday and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Tours last about 45 minutes. Admission: Adults $6.50, Seniors and Students $4.50,.
A recent poster on this site suggested lunch at the 4th fl Delegates Dining room when you're at the UN. Haven't tried it but sounds intriguing. "Menu changes monthly & it is a very good deal for $20.50 pp for a huge eclectic buffet. Ordering from the menu is more $-prohibitive). Reservations MUST be made in Advance @ 212-963-7626. Show ID in lobby where you check in & you're given a pass for you & your group to proceed to the 4th fl. When you return to lobby your ID will be returned to you. "

The UN website (un.org./tours) says that the UN may be closed on certain days when the General Assembly is meeting. Please call 212-963-TOUR (8687) for up-to-date information. Opening hours are subject to change.

760 United Nations Plaza
New York, NY 10017
Location: 1st Ave. & 43rd St.

Subway: number 4,5,6 or 7 trains to Grand Central Station; walk on 42nd Street to First Avenue. Buses: M15, M27, M42, or M104. Entrance is at 46th St. and 1st Ave.

A great place for lunch in August in mid-town would be Bryant Park Grill behind Bryant Park. You can eat outdoors (covered in the rain) I saw "Mr. Big" from Sex and the City last time I was there.....

Bryant Park Grill
West 40s
25 W. 40th St. (bet. 5th & 6th Aves.)
Tel: (212) 840-6500

Favourite pre-theatre restaurants are as follows. All in areas near the theatres and offer pre-theatre dinners:

Barbetta. 21 West 46th Street. Italian. Prix fixe pre-theatre dinner at about $55. They have a courtyard garden which is lovely in summer, plus several other nice dining rooms. Take a look at www.barbettarestaurant.com/

Orso. 22 West 46th Street. Tel: (212) 489-7212 Italian, including some nouvelle cuisine. A New York favourite.

Rene Pujol. 21 West 51st Street (between 8th and 9th Ave). 212-246-3023. Great French food in a lovely atmosphere. /www.renepujol.com. They offer prix fixe pre-theatre dinner at about $45.
