First time to Lake Tahoe
We are thinking about going to Lake Tahoe sometime this summer. We do not gamble and are not interested in the night life. We like the outdoors, mountains, boat or raft trips, hiking and picnics, horse back riding, etc. There are so many places around the lake and we are not sure whick area would be best for our situation. We are two couples over 55 with no kids. Any suggestions of area, lodging, etc. would be helpful.

For what you want I'd stay somewhere on the west side of the lake or along the north shore. Near Tahoe City at the NW corner of the Lake would be great. Or farther south like Homewood. Or on the north shore near Carnelian Bay
Just about anywhere except Stateline/southshore.

patcla46,
I'm about to give you the best tip for Lake Tahoe. I'm just payaing it forward because this was the best tip for a summer tahoe trip I took about 3 years ago from a friend who lives in San Fran who is VERY outdoorsy (he does crazier things than we do!). I'll see if i can find those pictures and post it here.
Angora Lake. Now be prepared for the shocked looks of the concierge when you ask. We had stayed at the Embassy Suites there near the casinos (good hotel with free full breakfast and suites for rooms - not to mention cheap). It was almost like he was reluctant to give it to me and even said "Wow, ok I'm impressed. That's more of a local secret hang out". In any case, ask for directions. It's not far from the main drag of Lake Tahoe. At the parking area, you will have to hike a mile up in a slight elevation but believe me, it is worth it. There's a little cafe there that serves simple but good food and you can swim and do some kayaking. It's gorgeous. I'll go find pics and if I can find them on this laptop (I have 3 so it may take awhile), I'll post back with a link to them
Let me know if you decide to go!

Here you go patcla46. Unfortunately, I could only find mostly our kayaking pictures there but we did alot of sunning ourselves by the beach, walking, etc. There's even a cliff area that some people dive off of! However, it's a really beautiful area and very quiet due to it being kept a "local secret". You'll like the peace and serenity. The concierge admitted he didn't like to mention Angora lake to tourist.

Maria_so - wow I'm shocked that you know about Angora Lakes!! I've been going there every year for about the last 15yrs. The first trip it was very difficult to find but now unfortunately things have changed. The road has been improved, the old parking lot was paved and now they charge for parking! What next???.... a tram to the lake???
But still, it's absolutely one of my favorite destinations around Tahoe. On a weekend, get there before noon to get a decent parking spot.
patcla46 - bring your camera to take pictures of "crazies" jumping from the cliffs into the lake.
