We will be visiting San Fran soon. Any suggestions for Chinese restaurants in Chinatown and cafes for breakfast/brunch around Union Square? Many thanks.

stsu, I always enjoy breakfast at Scala's. They are on Powell, one half block up (north) from Union Square. Right next to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Not sure of the hours that breakfast is served but their ph.# is 415-395-8555.

Across the street from Scala's is Sears.
I have not eaten there since they reopened so have no idea if they are as popular as the original Sears but you could check them out also. The old Sears was an old SF institution and hopefully the reopened Sears is good too.
And a wonderful restaurant for breakfast/brunch is at Kuleto's. They are attached to the Villa Florence Hotel. This is one half block down from Union Square (south) on the right hand side on Powell St.

P.S. I don't eat Chinese food so am not recommending any as the restaurants that were wonderful may or may not be anymore but surely somebody help can give you suggestions on this.

Chinese restaurants in Chinatown:

New Asia Garden on Pacific for dim sum.

Far East Cafe on Grant for dinner.

Best Chinese food in SF will not be in Chinatown. And, fergadssake, avoid the ones that are recommended in the magazines, or by the "in" people, like one of the "in" places - Shanghai 1930 (not in Chinatown) or that other horror house of "Chinese" food - PF Chang's. These tend to be expensive and not authentic. They make their money off liquor.

If you want the best Chinese food experience in the Bay Area, try Koi Palace in Daly City. Authentic food at good prices. No atmosphere, no service, just great food.

Off of Union Square for breakfast/brunch is Lori's Diner - 50's decor and very decent food for a very decent price.

Best Chinese restaurants (Dim Sum, etc.) are probably found in the Richmond/Sunset Districts, rather than in Chinatown. BUT we took a fabulous tour with WokWiz - walking tour of the history of Chinatown that included lunch. It was pouring rain but we all stuck with it. I'm a San Francisco native and learned many new things about the area and had a wonderful tour guide, Wok Wiz owner Shirley Fong-Torres. I think website is w.wokwiz.com
