First Time New York Visitor --> Seeking advice
I will be going to New York from Sept 29 - Oct 03 2004. I have a wedding to attend in buffalo on the 2nd, but i figured I would visit New York City first. Being my first time and all, I wanted some advice on what area to stay, what attractions are worth seeing and anything that comes to your mind. My boyfriend and i were thinking about staying in midtown west area. Let me know your thoughts.

you realize that Buffalo is not near the Island of Manhattan, right?
Midtown on the west side is the theater district, great for theater and people(tourist) watching.
If you are young people, you might prefer the East village. Great restaurants, great shopping and people (locals) watching

Buffalo is probably 8 hours or more from NYC. That being said, I think that for the first time, West Midtown is a good choice. Time Square, Broadway Shows, Rockefeller Plaza. Keep in mind you can always take a bus, subway, taxi anywhere else you want in NYC. Central Park, Soho, The Village, are all places you will want to visit.

I recommend staying at The Blakely (formerly The Gorham) on West 55th Street because you will be within walking distance of many of the major sights such as 5th Avenue, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park and the theater district just to name a few. You will also be near many diverse restaurants. You can probably get a deluxe room for about $225.00 per night. Deluxe rooms include a kitchenette and other amenities including the use of Frette robes. I am curious as to where you are traveling from and how? Buffalo is a long car ride away from the city.

Thanks for your prompt replies! Yeah, Buffalo is quite a ways. We were going to drive there, but we decided to fly instead once we realized it would take about 8 hours to drive there. We are going from Chicago --> NY City --> Buffalo --> Chicago. We are in our mid twenties and just wanted to make sure we have a great experience there.. Thanks again!

"I wanted some advice on ... what attractions are worth seeing..."
New York has a lot of attractions, and what I might consider an "absolutely must see" would bore your to tears. So it would help our ability to assist you if you give us some idea what types of attractions you are hoping to find. Museums? Shopping? Offbeat areas? Ethnic neighborhoods? Famous sites? History? Houses of worship? We can't tell you where to find something unless we know what it is you're looking for!
