First time in New York...preshow dinner
We will be staying at the Hilton new York and seeing Mamma Mia on Nov. 11th. Would you suggest having a preshow dinner around the hotel and then go on to the show or eating in the theatre district? Any suggestions for either? I know we are having Italian on another night but can never get too much, otherwise we are open to any and all kinds of food. I know the late notice may limit our choices.
Thank you

On days we're doing the theater we always do a late lunch and then dinner afterwards. It's much more comfortable - and less sleep-inducing - to see a show when you have not just had a big dinner. (We take a nice long walk after going out to dinner whenever possible to help work off some of those calories.)

The Hilton on 6th Avenue is practically in the Theatre district. So eating near the hotel or in the theatre area are almost the same thing. I would recommend Abbocato (Italian) or Molyvos in the West 50s...these are not "theatre district" places per se and you might not feel as rushed as you would in the typical theatre district places. To enjoy a leisurely meal, eat at 5:30 if you can manage it..then take a nice walk to the theatre afterwards. You can see the menus of these and all the other choices on menupages.com Another good place in the district is Baldoria.

We like to come back to the Hilton in the afternoon to put our feet up and rest. One of us usually runs out to the market/deli across the side street from the Hilton and grabs sandwiches, salads, etc. to eat in the room.
After the show, we stop by for a small meal or just desserts. Saves money, but the main thing is we need a break from all the serious sight-seeing during the day
