First night stopover - Salt Lake City or Provo
I am flying to SaltLakeCity on Sat. night of Labor Day Weekend. Arrive 8:30 p.m. Sun. I drive to Moab.
Should I stay Sat. overnight in SaltLakeCity or should I get a jump on day 2 and drive to Provo.
I've never been to these plcaes (been to SE Utah previously). I have no great interest in Mormon history but wonder if the Mormon Tabernacle is a must see like St. Peters in Rome.

I suggest you stay at a motel near the airport. There are several just west of the terminal building including a Fairfield Inn and, at the time I was there, a Sheraton Hotel and a Courtyard by Marriott.
By the time you have your rental car and find something to eat, it will be 9:30 or so. Stay overnight and get a good jump on traffic the next morning.
The Mormon Tabernacle is interesting, particulary if there is a rehersal going on. The acoustics in that huge room are amazing.

The Airport Four Points Sheraton Hotel closed and is now a Hampton Inn. I think this part of town (around the airport) is pretty unromantic. I would recommend a city-centered hotel and spend a couple of hours early Sunday morning wandering around temple square. There will be a taping of the tabernacle choir that should be something you would enjoy. Have breakfast at Lamb's Cafe on Main Street while you're there. Unless you need to be in Moab Sunday morning, I would suggest staying in Salt Lake.

Downtown Salt Lake is only 15 min. from the airport. You should be able to get a weekend rate at a nice hotel downtown near Temple Square, which is beautiful day or night. Bambara has a great breakfast I don't see much advantage to staying in Provo.

Downtown SLC is your best bet. The Grand America or Little America is nice and has weekend rates. There is also 3 Marriott hotels that are nice. If you have time see Temple Square in the morning and try the Park Cafe for breakfast! Excellent food.

We flew to SLC on our way to Mtn bike in Park City. Only stopped in downtown SLC long enough to eat dinner, but it looked like a pretty cool downtown, and seemed to have quite a bit of nightlife possibility.
We had a good dinner at the Globe Cafe by Moonlight , as I recall, they were open pretty late.
