Films to bring to Maui

Hello...

Only a few weeks away from our Maui trip and I wanted to ask the more experienced travelers:

What type of film (or films) should we bring?

Any advice on disposable cameras (brand, etc)?

And how MANY rolls would be suffice?

Thanks guys.

I read something recently that said that the xray devices will/may damage your film, no matter what the speed. So if you do bring film you should carry it on and have it visually inspected. As far as disposable cameras, the security at the airport (when requesting a visual inspection) said I have 2 choices, a) put thru the xray, or b) open it up so they can see the inside. Obviously b was a bad choice so I went with a. Now you question may be "what did the pictures look like? did it damage the film?". The answer is, the pictures were ok (but had a greenish tint, may have just been since the pictures were taken underwater), but I don't know if they would have looked better if they were not xrayed. So my suggestion....but the film in Hawaii and have it developed while your there, probably a little more expensive (I have never been to Hawaii yet so I don't know), but your safest choice.

Due to the lower latitudes of the Hawaiian Islands, you need to buy different film than the kind one would use in the rest of the United States. Go to a good photo shop, not a wal-mart type and ask for ISO 250 or 445 film. Make sure they don't try to give you 200 or 400 it will be the wrong stuff. Be persistent, you might want to try calling shops first. This film will accurately capture the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands without the color shift normally associated with the States film. As for disposable cameras, the best one reviewed by photo magazines is the Fisher Price ez view. Mahala.

If I am traveling by plane, I now buy all my camera film (disposibles) when I arrive. Also, there are 1 hour photos everywhere now, so I have them developed before I return. I don't trust the x-rays and/or security people... it's so much tighter now (as it should be) and I don't want to risk the x-rays to my pictures.

Kal, how unkind of you. I hope JJSoon knows you are pulling his/her leg.

JJSoon, just in case you are really a complete photo novice, there is no such thing as 250 or 445 film speed.

I think Kal is being pirated... last trip I brought 400 film with me & had it developed on Maui at a price comparable to the mainland. For disposables we've found both Kodak and Fuji to be good.
Now I carry a (2 megapixel)digital camera so no worries about film and I get 300+ shots per memory chip !

Buy a polarizer....it will greatly improve pictures taken outside in bright light. Skies will come out more intense.

Aloohaaaa,
xxx-As the Turtles said way back in the 60s "It ain't me, babe...".
But the response did remind me of "Mr Mom" when Martin Mull asked Michael Keaton, "What kind of electrical witring you using, 220?"

"220, 221, whatever it takes...".

As for film anywhere on Hawaii, I buy stuff that shoots well in sunlight and stuff that shoots well around the pool bar at night. Whatever number that is!
And that's about the extent of my
techical knowledge when it comes to cameras.
In fact, I just may send "pspercy" a few dollars and have him buy my
digi-cam for me! ;-D
13 mo' days!
