I was wondering if it is possible to take a ferry over to MV from Boston or Rhode Island? I have never been to either of these states so I'm curious. My only other route would to be to fly into either Boston or Providence and take a taxi. Please help!! Thanks!

Or you could fly from Boston or Providence to MV.

There's no ferry from Boston, because MV is south of Cape Cod.

Other alternatives are taking buses or other public transport from the city to the ferries in Woods Hole or Hyannis. Here's som ebus info:

"Anonymous" is correct. You cannot "ferry" from Boston or Providence to Martha's Vineyard. You'd have to either rent a car and drive to a ferry terminal, or fly (if you can afford it, the best bet).

During the day, there are very frequent flights from PVD ( Providence airport) to MV and Nantucket on Cape Air.
There is also a ferry service from New Bedford, Ma to the islands. New Bedford is an easy 35 minute drive from Providence. There is a proposal for a new ferry service from Quonset, RI to the islands. This will be a great option in the future for folks who fly into PVD.

If you're pretty mobile (not too much luggage or too many young kids), the bus from the airport to the ferry is the cheapest and decent way to go. If you do plan to ferry (cheaper than flying), the best place to get all sorts of good information and links is the ferry service itself, the Steamship Authority (which serves both MV and Nantucket) at islandferry.com. Lots of maps, island info, and good area links. They have a link to Bonanza, who runs the buses. Even better, they usually put out a brochure with all the schedules (incl the bus) in one place. If you have time to get one by mail, request it and it's very handy.

If you want to fly, the destination insider site is pretty good or try calling the airport; the game of who flies to MV each season seems to change.

For local information on MV, try www.mvy.com for the chamber of commerce and/or www.mvol.com for MV online. The ferry site has similar links for Cape Cod. I've also written a few hotel reviews on tripadvisor.com if you search on Martha's Vineyard or Edgartown. Not only do I love the place but we got married there so we spent a lot of time explaining the travel details!
