To Betsy-Just curious...Why did you pick Raleigh/Durham as one of your least favorites. Just to let you know, there is no Raleigh/Durham. They are 2 separate cities that are very different. I've lived in RALEIGH for 10 years, and I think it's a wonderful place. Raleigh has a lot to offer. No, it's not Atlanta, D.C., Chicago, or any big city of the sort, so if you visited Raleigh looking for big city life, you're not going to find it.

To DSH. Yes I know that Raleigh/Durham are seperate cities. I guess I shouldnt have generalized! Sorry if I offended you I actually lived in Raleigh for a year, and I found the area to be pretty boring It just reminded me of one big suburb. As you mentioned in your post, I guess I'm more of a "big city" person and I love the ocean and skiing, so here I am in Boston now and loving it. I met lots of people who love it in Raleigh, and have nothing but good things to say about how friendly and hospital people were. It just wasnt my cup of tea. Thats just my opinion!!

My favorites:

Washington D.C. & L.A. (have all of the big city amenities of NY & CHI, without being NY or CHI)
Portland, OR (all of the beauty of the Pacific northwest w/o most of the crazies of Seattle)
San Diego
Cleveland (yes, Cleveland! Have you been there lately?)
Palm Springs
Las Vegas (so it doesn't have broadway-caliber shows...who cares?!?)
Richmond

Least Favorite:

New York (sorry, folks; not all of us enjoy high prices, high crime, lousy weather and snotty people. I can take one, but not a combination of all of them!)
Chicago (ditto N.Y.)
Miami (Still has a way to go)
Danbury, CT (Where the living dead go to mingle)
Buffalo (Cancer patients should move there, since one day in Buffalo feels like an eternity...)

...Just my humble opinion!

Favorites to visit:

1. New York (far above all the rest)
Despite "high prices, high crime, lousy weather and snotty people" its plusses far outweigh its negatives.

2. Boston (almost unmatched for history)

3. Chicago

Least favorite:

Houston (no compelling reason to visit other than the Johnson Space Center, and it says something that Sam Houston hid there from Santa Ana because he figured [correctly] that no sane person would march into such a hot, humid, mosquito infested area)

What's this? No one, not a single soul, has pegged Phoenix and the sprawl that surrounds it as their least favorite place? Wowee!

Phoenix has it all. Endless strip malls. Sprawling suburbs. Fast food eateries. Heat. Dust. Little culture. Little to do if you live there. Horrid local newspaper. Chewing tobacco nuts. Gun nuts. Traffic woes. Rocks and dirt can actually constitute a properly landscaped front yard. Even escaping across the Arizona borders for a vacation doesn't help. There's Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the east, California (LA or SD) to the west, and Utah to the north. Ugh!

Best: San Francisco. Man, I really miss that town. Truly charming, but it was just too darn expensive for me.

Cedar: I did put Detroit on my "least favorite" list, and yes, in addition to living right across the street from the Detroit Zoo as a child, visiting for more Tiger baseball games than I can count during my growing-up years, spending lots of Saturdays at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and spending many summer weekends boating on Lake St. Clair, I worked there (right in downtown Detroit -- if you're thinking "large auto manufacturer" you're on the right track) for several years.

I usually find my favorite cities are a result of having a local to hang around with. That bias being said:

1. Boston
2. Seattle
3. New Orleans (as long as you don't stay more than 3 days)
Honorable Mention: I dig Eugene, OR even though there's really nothing exciting there.

Least:
1. Detroit
2. Orlando
3. New Orleans (if you stay over 3 days. Can only drink so much...)
