Favorite U.S. City
Whats Your Favorite U.S. City?
Whats Your Least Favorite City?
Do you like the east coast, west coast,
or mid west? To sum this all up, vote
for what you like and why.

Favorites - 1. New York
2. San Francisco
3. New Orleans
All are great walking cities, with great food and music. Honorable mention to Seattle, Charleston and Santa Fe.

Worst - 1. Las Vegas - heat + polyester=misery
2. Scranton - do you really need me to explain?
3. Los Angeles-I'm not in love with my automobile.

OK

I'll do a top 3 as well

Favorites:

1. Boston
2. New York City
3. Philadelphia

Why? Vibrant walkable cities with great public transit, diverse people, great food and people-watching, cultural opportunities galore, festival cities...

Worst-- I can only pick ones I've been to...and even these I can think of some things I like about them.

1. Los Angeles--too brown, need a car to get around, smog, superficiality reigns.
2. Norfolk/Va. Beach--few cultural opportunities for my liking, public transit inefficient, too conservative for my taste.
3. Wilmington, Del.--despite its central location, the downtown core seemed pretty dead...I prefer vibrant urban centres. People seem to prefer suburban life here.

It sort of depends to me on whether you mean favorite to visit or favorite to live in. I'm going to assume since this is a travel forum that you mean favorite to visit. My favorites:

#1 Washington DC (even though I currently live here, I'm voting for it as my #1 favorite to visit because when I didn't live here it was my favorite place to visit)-- very walkable, good metro system, attractive old neighborhoods, fantastic museums (many of which are free), great restaurants, good hiking & other outdoorsy activities nearby, decent weather compared to #2&3.

#2 New York -- for the fantastic theatre and restaurants and museums and shopping and neighborhoods and overall excitement.

#3 Chicago -- for the lakefront and shopping and great neighborhood bars and restaurants and the friendly people and the architecture and wonderful food and ethnic neighborhoods and the overall casual, unpretentious, fun atmosphere.

My LEAST favorites:
#1 Detroit -- terrible public transport
#2 Newark -- feels really dirty to me
#3 Fayetteville, NC -- seedy pawn shops and strip clubs and not much else.

Favorites -

Boston
San Francisco
New York
D.C.

Least favorites -

This is kind of ridiculous - I mean NEwark, harlem, are obviously bad, and therefore uninteresting answers.. THere are some truly awful cities in this country. If you rephrase as generally well liked cities that I personally do not like - ie places that a reasonable person wouldn't regard as armpits that are still my least favorite - I would say

Miami
Orlando
Denver

I haven't been to LA yet, though from what everyone I know who lives there tells me, it would be on my list as well.

I just moved to St. Louis and love it.
We have the Rams, the Cardinals,
great areas to live in and the downtown
is going through a great revitalization.
My kids have lived in other places and love St. Louis the most.

Other favorites:
Kansas City (believe it or not)
Chicago
Santa Fe

Least Favorites:

Las Vegas
Detroit
Denver

Since this topic is only vaguely related to travel it should be put under the heading "Special Topics" or "Other Topics" instead of cluttering this site.

I love Minneapolis. It is a wonderful small "Big city". There is a lot to do and wonderful park systems with lots of places to get outdoor exercise year round. I think I see more people out running, skating, biking, walking, skiing. etc in Mpls. Area than in L.A. We moved from Mpls. to the Los Angeles Area because of a job transfer but get back there as often as possible and always look forward to moving back to Mpls.

I like cities with water vistas and good culture, hence: Boston, Seattle, San Francisco.

I choke on cities made of plastic, hence: Las Vegas, Orlando, and Las Vegas again.
