family urban wilderness travel

Has any family visited an urban wilderness spot in the U.S., such as found in Portland Oregon, Washington DC, Austin TX, Charleston SC and other places? I'm a travel writer doing a piece for a national magazine on wilderness travel (hikes, bike trips, kayaking) right outside your urban backdoor for families. And I'd like to interview a family that has done something like this. Would you let me know? [email protected]

Urban wilderness? Oxymoron isn't it?

Outside Charleston the ACE Basin is the closest thing I can think of. The ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1990 as part of a joint effort between federal and state government agencies, private conservation groups and local landowners to preserve and protect the ACE Basin area. The Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers which give the basin its name, combine to create one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the Atlantic Coast.

Something like 250,000 acres of protected land.

Where do you live, can you and your family do something like that? maybe go to some city and do it. The first hand experience is what you are looking for, right?

How big has to be a city/town/village? Is Lake Placid, NY small/big enough? How about Tucson, AZ or Sirre Vista, AZor Anchorage, AK? They all have what you are lloking for. Now, what you need to do is to go there and do your research

Richmond VA has the only whitewater class rapids in a city in the US.

Last week in Denver I drove 20 minutes west of town on 70 and found a single lane dirt road that went for miles and miles... winding up then down a mountain with a sheer cliff and no guard rails the whole way. Loads of mines along the road and NOT ONE other person or car along the way. Not even one house...
I ended up in Central City.
This drive was spectacular... would have been fun on a bike.
