Family Lodging, NYC and everywhere else

Family togetherness is great, but I'm sick of giving up all privacy with my spouse to share a tiny two bed (hopefully) room with my teenage kids. Of course, the industry would be happy to bust your budget with multiple rooms. Anyone have any ideas about great family lodging solutions in New York, particulary for a reasonable price like under $200/night? Also, please post here other good ideas for family lodging around the country. Thanks Hilton for the reaonably affordable Garden Suites chain with two room suites. Other ideas? Thanks.

Try affinia.com. They have multiple properties in NYC adn depending on when you visit they have some great deals. One bedroom wuites with sleeper sofa (1 or 2 beds in bedroom), full kitchen , dining table, etc. A friend is working in NYC and has been staying at their properties for the last few months, ranging in price from $129-199 (depending on which property). They are very nice and in case you are interested they have a fitness center on site. Check travelzoo also - that is where I found a $129 rate for Affinia !

I keep seeing these recommendations for affinia, and I just don't get it. I keep trying their website for all kinds of dates between now and June, and even trying any kind of room, searching all their New York facilities, I always get the same response -- nothing available. Either they are sure popular, or they have a very faulty website. Their website shows that you need to call for after June, but I can't find a single thing available before then. I was just trying to find prices, as the last time I checked I thought their prices were all well over $200. Am I wrong?

I'll look at the Travel Zoo site.

Sgorces -- I can sympathize. Sharing a room isn't practical after your kids reach a certain age.

I'm noticing, too, that many hotels forbid more than 3 to a room -- which I find incredible --

There is an Embassey Suites in New York, but it's more than $200 a night. YOu can always try to bid for 2 rooms on priceline -- ?

I'm actually thinking of renting an apartment through vrbo or something similar for our trip to NYC this summer, for this very reason. Not cheap either, but at least more room, and the option of cooking in.

Patrick: I checked with my friend and he said that he had dificulty with their web site a few times in the last month and had to call them directly. He did confirm his rates - nothing over $199 but has had to stay at different properties each week due to unavailability of consecutive weeks at any one property since Feb. That being said, upon check out once, he was told they did indeed have rooms although someone at their main number had said they did not. Perhaps last minute cancellations since that was the weekend of the big snow !?!? Good luck !

$200 for a room in NYC with two rooms for four people is not reasonable.

I suggest two rooms on priceline.

sgorces-
Good luck finding something tolerable under $200/night in NYC!! You might try www.metro-home.com for quite reasonably priced short-term apartments.
Patrick, I have stayed at two Affinia properties and been pleased. I, too have had occasional trouble using their website (www.affinia.com) but the phone agents have always been helpful.

You want to have 4 people in one room for under $200/night AND have privacy? It's a joke right? Maybe in Peoria.

The cheapest option is to rent an actual apt., but even there, a one bedroom will not provide privacy for everyone. Here are some websites for short stay apts.

www.hospitalityco.com

www.radiocityapartments.com

www.empirestateproperties.com (may only be for min. one month-2 buildings, Executive plaza midtown west or Cove Club condo on Battery Park City)

www.signatureproperties.org (all downtown and all basic I think.

http://www.trpproperties.com/listing...stingID=100003 429 east 52 st

Apt style hotels besides the Affinia group are Murray Hill Suites, the Salisbury, the San Carlos, the Kimberly, the Beacon, the Milburn, Radio City Apartments, the Blakely. the Helmsley Carlton, the Bedford, the Lombardy, the Carnegie Suites and the Buckingham, too.

The Embassy Suites downtown is good but not so centrally located. The Doubletree Suites in Times Square is well reviewed although not cheap.

There are also a number of b and b type places in brownstones that have family type set ups. Look at 1871 House, www.jacksbandb.com and countryinnthecity.com

Agreed that $200 for a suite for 4 - or two separate rooms in hotel are unlikely (hostels are like $35 per night per person and up in shared rooms). Suggest you do Priceline for two rooms and hope to get somethng reasonable for $100 each.

Your other option is to stay outside the city and travel in each day - but IMHO not worth it - who wants to waste 2 hours a day of vacation in transit - not to mentin the cost of four train, bus or ferry fares.

Specifically for NYC, we rented a one bedroom suite in the Manhattan Club for a week. It has two bathrooms and a fold out to sleep four. I got it off eBay, but you can check other sites as well.

When we travel and plan on staying in one place for a week, we rent off VRBO. We're a family of four.

Travel Inn! W42nd St

Just over $100 a night for a double/double. Rather basic but how much time do you spend in your hotel room in NY? A couple of blocks from Times Sq and (if you visit in summer you'll appreciate this) a pool! At this price you can get 2 rooms.

No restaurant but a cafe next door - by the 3rd morning they knew what we wanted to drink.

I've also found good deals on the Shelbourne (an Affinia hotel) on travelhero. Last memorial day visiting family booked 1 bedroom suites there at $178. SOme were booked with a special offer (grandparents special) on affinia.com, and after that was no longer available, I found a similar deal on travelhero.com. The 1 bedroom was very roomy. ANother decent suite hotel is the Avalon. I don't know what the rates are, but 3 years ago we got it on priceline for some visitors, and it also was very roomy, and included a decent continental breakfast. I don't hink it shows up on priceline much anymore.

We also have 2 teens, and do end up in 1 big room most of the time (my son once described the family hotel room experience as "the whole family sleeping in a living room"). We have stayed in residence inn's on occasion where we had a suite set up with a kitchen. In Scottsdale once we landed the Millenium McCormick Ranch on PRiceline. We anticipated a regular hotel room, but by luck, were upgraded (for free) to a 3 bedroom townhouse that was enormous. This was pure luck, and not likely to happen with a priceline or conventional reservation, but boy did all of us enjoy our privacy (along with individual TVs and bathrooms).

By the way, I would not use priceline in NYC unless you go for 2 rooms. It's too risky, as many of the hotels on have 1 bed in a room. This is true with many of the other major cities.

DOubletree SUites is another chain that has decent size suites for 4. The one near TImes Sq is nice.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I didn't say I expected to find options for under $200 in NYC, I just asked if it was possible. I used Priceline on my last trip and got burned. They put us in the Hudson for $135/n when they were running their first year promo for $95. It was nice, it just would have been a lot nicer at the price all the neighbors were paying. Fortunately no kids on that trip 'cause the room was tiny. Had a terrific trip and loved NYC. The people were extremely gracious, informative and friendly. Still interested in family solutions for other venues. Thanks!
