Fall foliage day trip NYC

this is a great site! I am hoping someone can help me with planning a day trip this weekend. I live in Nyc, with no car. On my trip, Most of all, I want to see amazing colors / views. I don't want it to be on a boat or train where we are unable to get off and walk around for a bit. I can't rent a car , and am looking to be back before 8 p.m. I don't have a whole lot of $ to spend. I know it makes this trip limited, but I am hoping there is some way I can make a day trip memorable. Anyone have any advice?

Try Putnam county. It is the size of Manhattan but only has 100,000 people because a lot of the county is reservoir for the City. Next weekend, however, could one week short of peak.

I believe you will be past peak. We just drove NYC thru Vermont the 13th-14th and the local newscast declared it to be peak. Sat was high winds with rain and probably blew off a lot of the leaves.

You could take a train to Poughkeepsie and hike or bike the Walkway Over The Hudson.

Vermont is certainly not a day-trip destination from NYC. There's just no way have we reached peak yet within a one-day trip of NYC. The leaves in the city haven't really begun turning yet. Peak downstate is about 2 weeks off. And the OP could go anywhere Metro North or NJ Transit can go. If I were going to do a one-day trip, I'd go up to Kykuit for the day. Just find out when peak color hits the area around Tarrytown... probably in a week or so, I'd guess (but perhaps this weekend, though that really seems unlikely to me given the temps).

Not near peak in Cold Spring yet as of Oct 20th. Whatever peak is. The early trees (sugar maples for example) have changed but still a lot of green out there as the Norway Maples have not even started. But a train trip up here is very easy and you will see lovely landscapes, and once here you can hike in several directions- up a mountain, or to a historic house with great views (Boscobel) or just wander the Village. There are a lot of reviews. Its about an hour fifteen minutes on Metro North Hudson Line.
