We stayed at the Hotel Seneca earlier this year and were very impressed- a great value. It is formerly an apartment building, so our room (and all rooms, I think) had a full kitchen, a separate dining and living area, and separate bedroom. We got a great rate- $109 per night- on www.quikbook.com.
It's one block off Michigan Ave. at the northern end. About 3 blocks from the closest red line station. It's right beside the John Hancock Building. Have a great time wherever you stay- we did!

I second Hotel Burnham, wonderful ambiance, great service, just a really hip , fabulous hotel.
It is in the theater district, 2 blocks from N. Michigan ave.
Atwood cafe in the hotel has alfresco eating and indoor dining. Excellent food.
There ia also a complimentary wine reception for guests. PJ

Try the "W" LakeShore. Great location. Very interesting hotel. Not great if traveling with kids though. Very near Navy Pier and the beach. They have a fantastic lobby bar thats packed in the evening. Only guests with a key can get in past 10pm, especially on Fri and Sat. Whiskey Sky is on a higher floor and is very trendy, but fun, especially if they open the rotating circular room at the top of the hotel. Prices can be high, but discounts are pretty abundant on different websites. Get a Lakeview room if you can. Well worth it.

We stayed at the Le Meridien on North Michigan Avenue last Memorial Day Weekend. Got the room for $90 a night and I bet it could be cheaper now. Lovely room, great service, huge bathrooms! Next to shopping. Two or three blocks away fr Giordano's Pizza.

Burnham is nice, but loop isn't the best area (good for sights, but not for nightlife, dining, etc. as more of a business area).
W Lakeshore nice and hip, heard they freshened the bathrooms, didn't redo completely (we love W's but don't like the W Tuscany and Court in NYC for this reason).
Best options for style, service and location in my order of preference...Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Peninsula, Sofitel. Park Hyatt is a distant fifth (hip rooms, but service very average).
