Excelsior Hotel UWS - is it a good location?

we found some good rates for Excelsior Hotel near Central Park but is the location ideal to base ourselves?
its only for 4 nights then we are off to DC and then back to NYC so we might try a different area then but just wondering ....

It's a great area of the city, easy to get around from there, the subway is close by and the bus runs right up Central Park West. You are steps from the park staying there, and heading to Broadway and Columbus Ave you will have TONS of choices of restaurants.

If you have a good rate, it's a good location.

We stayed near the Excelsior (at the Lucerne) and loved the location. You are a bit far from the theatres but so close to the park, the Natural History Museum and many good restaurants. I loved the more neighborly feel of this area compared to staying in midtown.

Ideal for what??? No one hotel/location is good for everyone. It's a great area if you're with kids since it's across from the Mus. of Natural History and near Central Park and the children's museum. It's not as central as staying in midtown but the trade off is you're in a real neighborhood where people live so there are lots of good, affordable local restaurants and services.

I love the location. It's half a block to the subway, and as noted above, a real neighborhood with lots of shops and restaurants.

great area - mid/upscale residential - so tons of inexpensive places to eat (New Yorkers eat out/order in a lot due to long working hours) right near Central Park and many of the major museums. Ten minutes to Times Square by subway - and 2 lines for extra convenience. Busy and real New Yorkish - but not frantic like Times Square.

that sounds perfect -we booked it!
i wanted to see a glimpse of real New Yorkers going about their day to day...its only for 4days before our DC trip and then back to NYC where we might stay in Midtown or West Village....
i heard the UWS is pretty too with pretty architecture and brownstones

For some of the best architecture check out the apartment buildings on Central Park West or some of the private mansions on Riverside Drive. (Yes, some have been divided into 4 or 5 apartments, but quite a few are still private houses - in the $25 million and up range for a townhouse.)

And any of the side streets is lined with brownstones - typically built between 1890 and 1920 or so.

We stayed there, LOVED it. Ideal to get to subway or to putter around local stores and cafes, but also comparatively quiet and, if you're on an upper floor on the right side, a nice view.

It's now usually out of our price range, but I'd go back in a NY minute.
