Mid-December at Williamsburg Inn. The fire alarm went off twice..shortly after we arrived in our room and then about 10 pm. Standing outside in pouring down rain in jammies in 40 degree weather for about half an hour. Was told later that that was a pretty common occurance..some malfunction of the fire alarm system..not comforting.

I learned from a seasoned traveler long ago to wear shorts/t-shirt (summer) or sweats (winter) to bed in hotel rooms because if you had to run out in the middle of the night, at least you're wearing something other than bedclothes or less. The people outside with only a towel should have met my friend.

You go to bed in clothes because of the possibility of a fire alarm? Isn't that a little extreme?
I spent the past 12 years living full time in two different hotels and never had to evacuate...except for a hurricane or three and they gave us plenty of warning. LOL

Sheraton Music City, Nashville. Fire alarm went off at 2:30 am. I pulled on some jeans and dashed out down the stairs. I was AMAZED at how few guests bothered to evacuate! Only a handful of people came out of a full hotel!
Standing outside in the dark, nothing was happening, no fire trucks responding, no hotel personnel. We walked around, entered at the front desk and asked what was going on. We were told it was a false alarm and to go back to our rooms, which we did.
Later that morning we found out it actually was a real fire in the kitchen and we had been told to return to our rooms while it was going on.
So much for well-trained hotel personnel....

This is my Fathers story...
About 20-25 years ago my Dad was on business in Mexico City. In the middle of the night the alarms went off. Dad grabbed his briefcase and evacuated the building. It was a real fire. Since his hotel was close to the American embassy, he walked there and was given shelter for a short while. After the fire was extinguished and things sorted out he was escorted in to his room to retrieve his belongings. Another hotel room was found for him until he could find a flight home. I was the one who recieved the 6am call from the Embassy telling me not to worry because the fire was all over the news, and he was OK, if not a bit rattled.
And yes, quite a few people died in that fire.

I posted this on another topic, but I will post this again here....
These things that I post really did happen over the course of my years in travelling that spans 20 + years. Not all in one trip. I really am starting to take offence at all these posters that think this is a 'troll'. How about a little advice.... what are acceptable topics to post? I am really asking, not trying to argue here.

This Morning! staying at the Edgewater Hotel in Seward, AK. Just as I was finishing breakfast, the hotel fire alarm went off and they evacuated the entire building. It took about 15 minutes for the fire department to arrive but was apparently a false alarm.
