East Coast weekend trip for 2 woman?

My best friend lives in downstate Va and I live in upstate NY. We're trying to think of someplace in the middle to meet for a weekend in early October. No NYC or Washington DC. Any suggestions on a locale, place to stay and things to do? We want to have a relaxing time but some fun things to do. thanks for your help!

Some suggestions: Cape May NJ, inner Harbor Baltimore, Annapolis MD, Old Town Alexandria VA.

Cape May has lovely Victorian B&Bs, historic tours, shopping, whale watching. Inner Harbor Baltimore has a great aquarium, museums, shopping, water taxis, history, restaurants in Little Italy. Annapolis has sailing, shops, historic walking tours, waterfront seafood restaurants. Old Town Alexandria has great shopping and restaurants, tour boats up the Potomac River to see DC.

I also say Cape May, NJ. There is something special about the Jersey shore in October. It has this wonderful light that only occurs at that time. There are some fun antique shops and farmers markets along Rt. 9 going north.

How about Philly? There are a ton of things to do (what are you interested in?) and many reasonably priced, very interesting restaurants.
