There is light rail from PDX into downtown Portland, OR. Don't remember how extensive public transit is otherwise, but I think you can see a fair amount using it.

No city has a better public transportation than NYC. Granted it is not the best from LGA, but once you get to Manhattan, unparalleled.

question - is a Super Shuttle van service considered public transportation or would it require use of a car seat?

I'm just guessing but you must not travel much and as such your statement shows your ignorance. There are at least 2 US cities that have much better PT systems. It's ok that you think what you think, but don't assume that NYC has the best. It doesn't.

What a pleasant way to disagree AA. Please, Oh great one, inform us which cities have better public transportation than NYC.

ok,

Chicago
trains running from both major airport terminals. Train lines to just about every part of the city. Buses to take one to just about every corner of the city.

Atlanta
just about the same.

but you can believe what you want.

Granted it is not the best from LGA

Pure nonsense. So your idea of a public transportation system is one that just goes from the airport to the city. What happens then? The word is SYSTEM.

After you take the MARTA into town is it still the most class based public transit I have seen, where there are no middle class people just working class?

Let us compare NYC to Chicago rail

NYC 232 miles of track
Chicago 102 miles

Number of stations
NYC 468
Chicago 145

Ridership yearly
NYC 2.6 billion
Chicago less than 1/4 billion

Hours
NYC 24/7 including all holidays
Chicago Depends on the line

And Chicago has nothing like NYC's suburban rail and buses

At least mine was an honest answer.

LIRR-Long Island Railroad
97 million riders a year
325 miles of track

Metro North-serving suburban north of NYC
83 million riders
329 miles of track

New Jersey Transit
81 million riders
398 miles of track

METRA
73 million riders
487 miles of track

Any other comparisons you wish to make?

One can get from both major airports to the city in Chicago with stops along the way.

Your statement:

"Granted LGA is little more difficult"

the entire city and suburbs and far out suburbs are covered by PT in Chicago.

Who cares how many riders are on it?

btw, that was not the OP's question, just so you know. Re-read again and try again.

I knew that was coming AA. Unfortunately you changed the definition and posted the map for Suburban Chicago transit, not I. I understand when arrogance is trumped by facts and logic, change the subject again.

Are the kids old enough that you feel comfortable taking them on crowded buses or trains, possibly having to make connections? Otherwise, I agree with most of the cities listed.

Doesn't it depend on what you want to do and see? It might be easy because there is nothing else to do.

What an odd comment.

The OP is coming from Boston. Flying into NYC makes no sense - Amtrak is the easiest way to go - city center to city center and chaaper than flying - plus much more comfy.

Sorry - and in comparing NYC to Chicago the city subway and bus were not included. Subway alone has more than 1.7 billion passengers per year.

And for those wanting to use public transit the trip from JFK to Manhattan is $7.50 via Air train and subway. (But for those in the NE corridor train is usually better then flying.)
