Dry Tortugas

I am considering taking the Ferry out to the Dry Tortugas when I visit Key West In April. I have looked into going out on a catamaran called Yankee Freedom. It seems to be a bit on the expensive side, but would like some feedback to see if it is worth the price tag. Has anybody taken this tour out to Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas? Fill me in if you please.

Unless you really want the experience of going on a catamaran, there is at least one service that will take you out and back at a very reasonable price.

I found the Dry Tortugas to be a worthwhile experience, particularly the guided tour of the former prison. But in truth, there's not much there other than the historic prison and the opportunity to do some scuba diving.

Ken, other than a catamaran or seaplane, how do you get there? We also plan on a trip to the Dry Tortugas, but would like to get there fast, but reasonable ( seaplane not an option.)ty!

You could try renting a private boat but I don't think it's much faster than the catamaran. The catamaran is pretty fast.

A private boat would be more expensive and slower.

If you take the catamaran, how much time does that leave you to see the fort and snorkel? Is it a rush rush deal?

The cat is the quickest way to get there other than flying. It's a high speed cat, motor, not a sailboat.

I took a day trip on the Yankee Freedom. http://www.yankeefreedom.com It leaves from Lands End Marina at the end of Magaret Street near the Turtle Kraals Restaurant. The cost is around $100 per person which I would think is considerably less expensive than the catamaran or the seaplane.

The 2.5 hour trip in each direction can be a bit tedious, but it's also a great time to catch some sun, read, and relax.

So Ken, how much time does that leave you at the Tortugas? Are you rushed?
