We are travelling with parents and a 3 yr old. Plan is to visit the Big Sur(stay a couple of nights) and then drive to Las Vegas. We were originally planning on heading to Santa Barbara for a day before driving to Las Vegas. That would be a shorted drive but it also cuts our time in Vegas, so we are now considering driving directly from Ragged point to Vegas. Mapquest shows 7 hrs...with stops it will probably take us 10 hrs. Are we crazy to attempt this with a toddler and parents? Would it be too tiring for all?

I would break up that drive in some way because I don't know about anyone else, but I certainly wouldn't want to spend a 10 hour driving day in a car with a toddler - LOL.

What time of year?? It would be a looooong gawd awful drive at the best of times - but in the heat of summer, yikes.

Ok, this does not sound good...I think we have to change plans and probably fly to Vegas from Santa Barbara.

Much of that route is extremely boring, and quite hot in daytime in summer. Much depends on how your family travels. If you aren't used to long road trips, it could be pretty painfull, especially because there is not much in the way of good stopping points to break things up along the way. On the other hand, we used to do trips like that all the time with our three kids. One trick is to start early (5-6 am) and get going quietly so the toddler doesn't really wake up; the drive will tend to put him back to sleep and you can usually get about 3 hours in before stopping for breakfast. This makes the remaining drive time a bit more manageable.
