lol...Bakersfield and Tehachapi? It only takes a day to frive there and there isnt anything exciting inbetween... I'd just add the extra day to Vegas! Have you looked at the map? You can fly from Santa Maria to Las Vegas on Allegiant for $49 each way... Santa Maria is only 45 min south of Cambria and it is about a 45 minute flight.

Cambria is about about 2.5 hours from Bakersfield which, in turn, is about 5-6 hours from LV, good roads from Bakersfield on, but traffic is always heaving on I-15 east of Barstow. I'd do it all in one day unless you have a strange urge to visit Bakersfield, Mojave, Boron, Barstow or Baker! On the other hand, you could drive to Baker and thence into Death Valley National Park for a day before going to LV via Parhump, NV.

When is the trip? In Summer, or between now and May? Makes a big difference.

If it is before mid May, the only place worth stopping is a detour through DV.

If it is after that - then just get to LV w/o stopping over anywhere. Bakersfield is an armpit and the desert will be HOT.

It is about 435 miles and 8 hours behind the wheel from driving directly from Cambria to Las Vegas, and I agree with boom_boom that Death Valley is the most interesting place to stay along the way. This detour would add about 100 miles to your trip, but it would be worth it.

Well, I have nothing bad to say about Death Valley. It's a wonderful destination, worth at least 2 days.

My suggestion is a bit different, and that is to drive down the coast to the LA area and stay overnight there, say in Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Beverly Hills, etc. Then the next morning, have a leisurely breakfast, let the rush hour traffic clear, then head for Las Vegas. I was surprised, when checking using Google Maps, that the total estimated driving time to Las Vegas is only about 45 minutes more than the shortest route through Bakersfield.

From Cambria to LA, you go through Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, the "quaint" Danish town of Solvang in the Santa Inez Valley, Santa Barbara, and if you decide to stay in Santa Monica or thereabouts, at Oxnard you peel off on hwy 1 and go down the coast through Malibu to Santa Monica. With the exception of the hwy 1 part, this route comes up on Google maps as one of 3 routes from Cambria to Las Vegas. So I didn't just make it up. And it's not boring.
