Hello. I would like to go to Maui and stay at Ka anapali shores. (First time) Do we need a car to get around? Thank you for your response.

Wouldn't recommend Kaanapali area. Wall to wall high rise condos & hotels & one tee shirt shop after another. It's the worst of tourist Hawaii. Try the other side of the island!

Why couldn't you have added Maui to your header? Why create mystery to a posting. More people will just pass it by.

In answer to your ? I would say yes you need a car. They have a shuttle tram thing between Lahaina and Kaanapali, but other than that you won't see much else of the island

We stayed in Kaanapali and loved it. We had a car and drove all over the island and had a ball. We got to stop where and when we wanted and take our time....I would splurge on a convertible tho. It was so much easier than taking pictures out the sun roof!

Who said Kaanapali is "wall to wall condos and hotels". There are seven conods and hotels along the main part of Kaanapali Beach. Is that wall to wall ? Check an aerial photo of Kaanapali Beach at the following web site:

http://www.kaanapaliresort.com/accommodations.html

And there are no t-shirt shops in Kaanapali Beach - Lahaina yes, but Kaanapali Beach no !

In answer to your question on whether you need a car I would say it depends on the type of trip you are planning. We went in March for our 5 year anniversary and we did not rent a car for the trip. It was our first time in Hawaii and we were more interested in relaxing by the pool or on the beach and being romantic as well as activities like snorkeling. We went sightseeing one day only and rented a car for that day only. we stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel and were within walking distwance of Black Rock (by the Sheraton) which is one of the best snrkeling spots. We were also withing a shor twalk of Whalers Village which is is a shopping restaurant mecca. we ate there most evenings, the Hula Grill was great. We did do the Old Lahaina Luau but booked the luau as a package before we went and it included shuttle service to and from the luau. (I wouldn't have driven that night anyway after the open bar!) Anyway we rented a car for one day, got up early and toured all over Maui that day. Other than that we relaxed. I don't like going on vacation somewhere and then having to get on the road and in traffic every time I waant a meal. We had a great time!
