We just rented a car from Thrifty at LGA. The price should have been something like $65. When we got the printout, it was closer to $110. When we asked why, they said renting the toll transponder (to which we had initially said yes because we knew we'd be going through several tolls) was $22 a day. Quick change and that was deleted - and we paid cash at the tolls.

If you are using your own insurance they are correct that the deductible would still apply. That is not a lie - just the truth. If you are happy driving around in your own car with a $500 or whatever deductible - why not a rental car? Just check the car before you take it and make sure any dents or big scratches are noted on your paperwork.
If you don't want any risk, then pay the extra.
