Dinner where on the night of your Lava Hike - Big Island?
For those of you who have toured the VNP during the day and taken the hike at dusk/night to see the Lava - Where to you eat dinner? - and when - before or after your hike?

Don't count on being able to hike out to the actively flowing lava; it hasn't been very accessible the last several months. Locations of lava flows change, so ask about conditions at the park visitors center when you are there during the day. You may find that you can only see the glow from afar, which would mean you want to wait for full darkness.

You need to make reservations for Kilauea Lodge many, many months in advance. We reserved for dinner last October back in January or February of 2003, or 10 months in advance and still didn't get our first choice of times. This was our second favorite restaurant on the Big Island next to Merrimans.

afterwards if you can...just so you don't feel rushed. dinner can sometimes take awhile and desert is just as good here. If you can't get a later reservation however, do the earliest possible...probably 5pm. Have fun on your trip
