we will be in new york on dec 13th to look at the christmas tree. can you recommend any places to eat nearby. we considered the sea grill but it is so expensive. we would like seafood however. thank you

Another Fodorite gave me the very good advice to look for little restaurants in the Time Square area, by walking a few blocks west from the Marriott there. It's close enough to Rockefeller Center to walk there.

It was great advice, as there are restaurants in every doorway, and each looked great. We chose Danny's Grand Sea Palace, www.dannysgsp.com, at 346-348 West 46th Street, 212 265 8130. It was pretty good, not great, but fine.

Maureen B, how far would Danny's Grand Sea Palace be from Radio City Apartments which is 142 west 49th Street? It looks a nice place to eat for a reasonable price.

Nelsonian, I'm sorry I don't know NYC well enough to answer for sure. But, looking at the addresses, it looks very walkable between the two. We had walked from Rockefeller Center ourselves, and that was a quick walk.

When you get to the block that Danny's is on, be sure to read other menus on the restaurants there. There are nicer places to eat on that block, by far. Danny's is kind of a family place, which was ok for us that night with our kids. But there were much nicer looking Italian and French restaurants on that block.

Do you have to eat at a seafood restaurant in mid-town? Blue Water Grill on Union Sq. has a prix-fixe lunch menu for $24. This is a top seafood restaurant. You can wander around the great Christmas market across the street afterward. A cab from Rock Center to Union Sq. would only be about $6.

Blue Fin in the W Hotel at Times Square is good (same owner as Blue Water Grill).

Danny's is quite close to Radio city apts. The street it's on, 46th st. b/w 8th & 9th ave., is called Restaurant Row. As Maureen says, it's one restaurant after another. Danny's is Thai/seafood and I think it's pretty good. Their prix fixe meals (lunch and dinner) are very good imo. Joe Allen's is on the same block, good for burgers and other basic American.

Another place that's very affordable at the other end of the street (9th ave.) is the Hourglass Tavern. They have full dinners for under $20. http://www.hourglasstavern.com/menu.html

In answer to lc4637, the area around Rockefeller Center will be very crowded, mostly expensive and seafood in general is expensive in NYC. The Redeye Grill on 7th ave. & 56-57 st. would be less expensive than the Sea Grill but still not cheap.

Marginal Mariela's idea of Blue Water Grill and getting out of midtown is a good one. If you're willing to travel there are other options too. The same people (BRGuest) also own the Ocean Grill and Atlantic Grill both of which have prix fixe lunches. (Blue Fin also part of the same group but no prix fixe).

Another idea if you want something festive and are willing to get dressed a bit is the 21 Club, a NYC institution. They have a prix fixe lunch that always includes at least 1 seafood entree and a pre theater (early) dinner. Eat in the bar room.

One more suggestion: City Lobster on 49th between 6th & 7th Aves. Not on the same level as Redeye Grill or Sea Grill but it's good and the prices are lower. Not sure if they still have a pre-theatre fixed price menu.
