Can anyone recommend a really great restaurant in Mystic CT? Would prefer something upscale with great food.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Can't recommend anything in Mystic itself - most are the "Ye Olde Taverne" types.

In nearby Stonington, however, Boom has terrific food, and believe it or not the Mohegan Sun Casino has three "upscale" destination restaurants: Michael Jordan's Steak House, Rain, and Todd English's Tuscany.

For delicious seafood (lobster, lobster bisque, mussels, etc.) in a causal setting, I highly recommend Abbott's which is at 117 Pearl Street, Noank Ct. It is 5 minutes from Mystic. The phone # is (860) 536-7719.

Bravo, Bravo was also recommended to me for my visit to Mystic, but I did not get a chance to go there.

There's the Ivoryton Inn and the Griswold Inn nearby which are very good

The Seamans Inn and The Steak Loft are pretty good. If you like maxican, Margaritas restaurant is fantastic!
Bravo Bravo is also excellent! Enjoy

Spent the past week in Mystic. The Steak Loft is excellent for steak and ice cold beer. My wife loved Go Fish, we went back twice. They have an excellent wine sampler. First time we had fish the skate and tuna were perfect. Second time we went we had sushi, again excellent. The best ribs were at the BBQ restaurant at the Mohegan Sun, they give you four sauces for your ribs. In Noank there are two excellent outdoor seafood stands at the end of the main stret- right on the water. One starts with an "A" and the other is Costellos. No need to dress up, they are both a lot of fun.

My wife & I are contemplating a weekend in Mystic (without a car - we live in Manhattan). Can anyone suggest a hotel near within walking distance of the good stuff? A great view would be a plus as well. (By good stuff I mean restaurants, bars, shopping, tourist attractions, etc.)

The "good stuff" in Mystic is not as close together as you might think from some of the advertisements. There are three places I can think of within a couple of blocks of the train station - Steamboat Inn, Whaler's Inn, and a Best Western. From any of those you could walk to the center of town and to Mystic Seaport. You would need to take a cab to Olde Mystic Village and the Aquarium.

Thanks, Ken. Of those three, which do you suggest? The Best Western probably is Not what we're looking for. We like a good location with nice atmosphere (some character). Also AC is a must. j

Finally, we can take a taxi to a hotel location that is better situated for the good stuff. A roundtrip taxi ride to a hotel is worth a better overall location.

Don't have direct experience specific accomodations , since I was studying at Mystic and stayed in one of the Seaport buildings.

The tourist attractions in Mystic are in two areas. The chain hotels like Hilton, Comfort, etc. are close to the Interstate. Heavy traffic, no atmosphere. Without a car, I would definitely not stay in that area, although Olde Mystic Village and the Aquarium are there, so it's worth taking a cab for a morning or an afternoon if you're interested in marine life, or shopping in a mall with "Olde" in its name.

The train station, the Seaport, and the business district are relatively close together. You might want to check out the website: http://www.mysticmore.com for more information. There's a listing of bed and breakfasts there that might be more suitable for you.

Most of the tourists in Mystic seem to be day trippers who go home or hit the casinos in the evening. During my summer in there a few years ago, I particularly enjoyed exploring the Seaport and the downtown area in the late afternoon or early evening when most of them had left.

Went to eat at Griswold Inn in nearby Essex this past weekend. Was expensive, but definitely worth it. Excellent food, fun bar with audience participation afterwards. Not an area known for taxi's, in case you were wondering.

Whatever you do - DON'T stay or eat at THE INN AT MYSTIC . .what a ripoff that place is!! We wasted $260 per night staying there. OUr rrom was supposed to have a "view of the ocean"....what a joke! It backed up to a tiny brook hidden by trees. The place is nothing but a glorified motel and their restaurant was horrible.

I've eaten at Bravo, Bravo many times and love it. It's the real deal! If you're willing to go to Stonington, the Water Street Cafe is great and Noah's, across the street, is good and full of atmosphere.

Try the Captain Daniel Packer Inne. Great food. Downtown. Some tables face the Mystic River. During winter months, the fireplace is going. Cozy.

Definitely the best food and best view restaurant is called Boom Restaurant in Stonington Boro sitting directly on the water. Make a reservation because they are frequently full. They opened up an additional one in Westbrook, Connecticut, also on the water with outside dining. The town of Stonington is also very quaint and historic.

Every time I have been to Mystic, my uncle would take us all down to Abbott's to sit at the picnic tables and make huge pigs out of ourselves eating lobsta. What memories. And then we would watch squirrels? I think? All running around having a good time.

Last time we were there we took our teenage girls to Mystic Pizza. We all decided that place was NOT overrated. The pizza and all that we had was great.
