Detroit Vacation
I am considering a trip to Detroit this month. Thought it would be cool to hear and see places where REAL music comes from. {If you do not know what I am talking about, don't bother responding.}
Where to stay... where to eat?
Probably hit the town Jan 24-27. Hot clubs? Madonna's old haunts? Hey.

Geesshhhh... Menmem just burnt a house down there while shooting a movie he is making. Ted Nugent is from there, as is Kiss, Bob Seger, Joni Mitchel, and a ton more great musicians. Like I said, if you don't understand, don't reply.
Now... where to stay, where to eat?

#1 Detroit is a dump town and especially dumpy in the winter. #2 They probably already burned down anything you want to see as most of the town has been torched at one time or another as people bailed out. #3 You must be under the age of 20 to even consider this trip and #4 At least go in the summer so you can sweat in the humidity instead of freeze your butt off and lastly: THIS HAS GOT TO BE A JOKE!

If your looking to do the whole LA thing of driving around looking at stars homes, or where they got their big break your pretty much out of luck. There really isn't a scene for rock music here, a lot of places are hole in the wall joints that unless your from that neighborhood you never hear about. There are some bigger places but they attract national acts that can't sell out the big places. No sunset blvd. or such here. That and eminem is considered a big joke here in Detroit, and KISS isn't from here, they just wrote the song because Detroit is a cool place to hold a show. So back to school young man.

Sorry so many people felt the need to knock your question. I am from the metro Detroit area, I don't live in Detroit, but the music scene is really starting to come about. Kid Rock and Pamela Lee were at a bar the other night about 2 miles from my office. Nelly Furtado was there not too long ago as well. The town is Mt. Clemens, and yes that is where Eminem is from and has a house close by. Madonna's house was just recently bought by some guy who wants to open it for tours although I think that would be pointless. There is a Motown museum in Detroit.
People just post stupid stuff about what they've heard about the area. Our winter only began about a week ago, until then it was in the 50s and we get less snow that Chicago, New England and usually New York. I think people are judging our weather by up north, which always gets on the news but most people just vacation there in the summer.
Check out the online site for our alternative newspaper, Metrotimes.com.
They have tons of info on the club scene and bands playing. The Hockeytown cafe across from our new Tiger Stadium is a cool place to eat, and there are many hotels on the riverfront and around the casinos. Greektown is a cool place to soak up the local culture as well. Hope this helps, enjoy your stay.

I can't help you with music, but I can say that if you're serious about eating then there's a fabulous (but expensive) restaurant in Farmington Hills (suburb, of course) called Tribute. I went to grad school at Univ of Michigan and have a soft spot for Ann Arbor. And for Detroit as well. Okay, it's not the prettiest city and I've never heard of anyone else wanting to go there for a vacation. But it is a place rich with history and relics.

There is a very good rock scene happening in Detroit right now and most bands love to play there because the fans are true blue music lovers. The ignorant posters who don't understand REAL music are doomed to lives of listening to Whitney Houston, Britney Spears and the other pretty boys who populate the pathetic top 40 scene these days.

Thanks so much for those of you who took me seriously. Good advice. I was thinking of checking out the scene in Ann Arbor... just trying to watch the time and all. I will check out the river hotels (overlooking Canada, I presume.) Will also look up the suggested restaurant in Farmington Hills. Never can get it all in!
And yes, I know about the vibrant music scene in Motown... duh. Did not know about the Motown Museum though... will have to check that out! Wonder if Aretha will be around.
Thanks for the Respect!

hey - would also love to know of any rave warehouse parties - but I suppose that this is not the best place to find that info out... But i WILL!

I lived there two different times and hated every minute of it. I can't imagine vacationing there, but like the one person said, the Renaissance area (I think it used to be called the Westin & it does overlook the water and Canada) would be the best bet. At least you could go to Windsor then in about 15 minutes if you want to get out of Detroit. I think it's also close to Greektown where you can ride the People Mover and there are quite a few nice Greek restaurants there.
