Des Moines for a Weekend

We are going to be in Des Moines for a wedding in early April. While there will be some wedding-related events, we'll have some free time Friday during the day and evening and also Saturday morning/early afternoon. I really would love some suggestions for what to see, what to do, where to eat (especially a good breakfast place) and where to have a good drink.

Thanks!

We really enjoyed Django for dinner and drinks. They do brunch as well.

The state capitol is gorgeous, one of the best in the country and well worth seeing.

The nearby Iowa State History Museum is very good as well.

I found the collection of the Des Moines Art Center kind of underwhelming, but it is free, at least.

Here’s a link with other ideas. Note that you’re far too early for the Iowa State Fair, though:

I did enjoy Jethro’s BBQ. It’s not the equal of the best Kansas City or Memphis spots, but it’s plenty good enough.

The signature dish of Iowa/Des Moines is the pork tenderloin sandwich.
