DC Half-Price Theatre Tickets

Can anyone comment on previous experience with TicketPlace. I've read where the booth opens at noon on Friday and 11AM on Saturday. How early do you need to get in line or is there a line (June dates)? What theatre/shows were you able to get? Kennedy Center? Warner? Ford? Do they sell out early?
I would also appreciate any comments on entertainment at night for a family with a 10-year-old.
Thanks for your help!

Always worth a shot, especially for families or groups! Ticketplace is located in the Old Post Office Pavilion at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave (Federal Triangle Metro Stop). Open Tuesday - Sat. 11-6 pm. They have quite a range of shows for all types of people. They DO sell out quickly the good shows. They do NOT get tickets to everything. Best idea is to call (202) TICKETS to find out what they have that day or to plant yourself there at 11 am. (They sell Sun & Mon tickets on Sat.) Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes not -- get the Wash. Post paper for listing of all available shows - Friday weekend section has short summary of shows. Take this with you when you go to make last minutes decisions. Many of the shows are for suburban theaters or the very funky R-rated way off-Broadway shows. For kids, Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center is usually available and Ford's Theater has family-friendly shows. Others are hit and miss. Remember - CASH only for same day 50% off tickets and they add a service fee. In June, the Post sponsors a FREE Shakespeare play at Carter Baron Theater up 16th Street -- same day tickets at their building 1100 block of 15th Street. Also check the Post for the FREE military band concerts at various monuments/Capitol during the summer. Very cool is the Marine tattoo at Iwo Jima

The Silent Parade at the Iwo Jima Memorial is really good. It's held every Tuesday evening between Memorial Day and Labor Day. I think it starts at 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. The Marine Corps marching band plays first, followed by the Marine Silent Drill Team. Very impressive. Lots of tossing guns around and such. Most people bring a picnic (and a blanket, as there's no seating). Very pleasant way to spend an evening. Easy way to get there is to take Metro to Rosslyn, and then walk (just ask someone to point you in the right direction.).\

It's one of those great things that people 6, 16 or 60 years old all enjoy, and it's free.

Iwo Jima is wonderful and the Navy Band plays in the summer at the Capitol on Mondays and the Navy Memorial (7th & Penn) on Tuesday and Washington Monument on Thursdays. Ticketplace has a good website http://www.cultural-alliance.org/tickets/tickets and you can check ahead of time what's potentially available.

Note the Marines also do the evening parade at their Barracks on Capitol Hill, very impressive. Reserve online:
