Day Trips FROM Martha's Vineyard
Hello there! I'll be spending about one week on Martha's Vineyard in July, and I was wondering if anybody knew of any good day trips FROM Martha's Vineyard. I'v always wanted to visit Cape Cod, but I have no idea where to go!!
If you had just one day, where would you go (on Cape Cod, etc.), and how do I get there from Martha's Vineyard?

Vivian, I agree w/ Greg. Once you get to the Vineyard, you won't want to leave; however, if you truly want to go for a jaunt, I'd consider Nantucket.
Although, the islands are geographically similar, they are still very different places. Besides, it's an easy two and one half hour ferry trip from oak Bluffs. No reservations necessary.
I don't want to slag the Cape; but, it really doesn't compare to either island. I wouldn't waste your time.

Hi Vivian:
You can take a ferry or plane to Cape Cod from Martha's Vineyard. Since you only have one day on the Cape you will find enough to see and do in Falmouth or Hyannis. I hope I answered your question better than Greg or Bill who like others on this board impose their own views rather than answer the question of the poster.

Thank you all for your input. I really do appreciate it. I'm from the south, and I'd love to spend all my time on MV, but at the same time I don't think I'll ever have a chance to visit the MV/Cape Cod again, so I want to see as much as possible while I'm there.
I will try Nantucket, and I'll try the Cape also.
BUT, one last question. Is there anything SPECIFIC you'd do at these places? Any specific recommendations? Why Falmouth? Why not Hyannis? etc. Which cities are easy for one day trips (ie ferries, etc.) We won't have a car, so convenience is also important.
Anyways, thanks in advance for your help!

Will you have transportation? Unless you are leaving the island with your car, you will have difficulty getting around as there is no public transportation that covers the entire Cape per se.
You want want to visit Sandwich - a beautiful historic town w/ Heritage Plantation (not like your Southern ones!!) or the Brewster area. If you were to take the ferry to Hyannis, you could easily walk to downtown Hyannis for shopping and eating.
I agree, if I were that close to something and had to go all the way back home wihtout at least trying to see part of it, I would kick myself forever!

Paula, thank you. I think I'll try Hyannis.
I don't have a car, so I guess that leaves me Falmouth or Hyannis. (Am I correct in saying that? Are there other places that a ferry will take me directly to from MV).
Am I correct also in assuming that it's a short walk from the port into town?
Thanks!

Hi, Vivian.
I absolutely love the Cape, but I do want to warn you that while I liked Hyannis, I did not think it really showed the best of what Cape Cod has to offer.
Since you are limited in time and transportation, I would really recommend considering the Cape Cod Central Railroad (www.capetrain.com). They have a station in Hyannis and they have scenic trains during the day so you can see some of the beautiful Cape landscape, and they also provide "on and off" at Sandwich, which is an absolutely charming village.
They also have a dinner train that is wonderful if you like that sort of thing. By the way, they have some of the nicest people working there. The first time I called them I got to speak with the owner (didn't know it at the time), and he was just the most charming gentlemen, couldn't be more helpful. Check out their website. I hope this helps.
