Day Trip to an Island

We will be staying in the Camden area the week of the 4th of July. Would like to take a day trip to one of the islands off the coast. Would like your recommendation on which one is your favorite. Read a posting that said biking was the transportation and that sounded fun. Less touristy and more adventure is good for us. Thanks! Cathy

Check out Isle au Haut, which is part of Acadia NP. You have to catch a mail boat from Stonington Maine to get there, which is an adventure in itself. The island has some wonderful hiking trails and only a handful of people who live there. Check it out.

Last summer, we drove to the town of Lincolnville, got on the dock ferry with our bikes, and went over to Islesboro. It is a lovely quiet island, fairly hilly, that even houses some famous people, such as John Travolta. It will take you most of the day to bike the whole island, stopping here and there for some great pics. Pack your lunch. You will love it.
Do a google search of Islesboro, Maine and the Lincolnville ferry for their schedule. Have fun!

These both sound wonderful. I had been reading about Monhegan and Swans Island. The ones you mentioned might be more remote those those two. Monhegan doesn't allow cars or even bikes. Its all hiking. I think we might take a couple of island trips. If you think of any more ideas or hints I would appreciate it. By the way, where did you rent the bike? Thanks!

jammncat,
We've also taken the ferry over to Monhegan Island from Boothbay. It was quite a few years ago (maybe 1998) but I'm sure it hasn't changed at all. It's a 12 mile trip on the ferry from Boothbay and we hiked around Monhegan which is a very scenic island. Very enjoyable day. Highly recommended.

You're right, not much biking on Mohegan unless it's mountain bikes and then it would not take you long to complete the loop. Even some of the southern islands like Peaks or Chebeague are fun and you get to those out of Portland.
