With every news report that I read, it sounds like the whole island is sinking/being washed out. I thought that it was contained to the north shore, but now I am reading stories of Hanapepe being under mud slides and the Waita Reservoir is about to breach. On Google Earth the Waita Reservoir looks to be huge/the biggest on the island.
How bad is it really. Are all of these news stories true. Should tourists stay away for a while. Or is the media just blowing this way out of proportion. I view the webcam at the Sheraton in Poipu and there are people lying by the pool and on the beach. It looks wet, but no more than the typical 10 minute shower that normally hits Poipu in the afternoon. What's the truth?

Having just spent another 4 hours broadcasting solo on KKCR radio this morning, I can tell you that what we are reporting, is news supplied by the police, State Highway, and Nat'l Weather Service.
The reporting mistakes in the newspapers are rampant; ditto for TV.
Kaua`i is still facing the possibility of more flooding -- the latest warning came from the Nat'l Weather Service, and has been extended to 2pm today.
Low lying areas are always susceptible to flooding during our rainy season...but this year is more extreme than normal, for sure.

I talked to my daughter in Kapaa 10 minutes ago. She and her husband just got thru on the last road into their home as the police were closing it (the road, not their home). Their daughter is at a friends and cannot get home. She said luckily they just did grocery shopping yesterday as they may be stuck at home for awhile. She said she was going outside to take pics and would send them to me in a couple of hours (I'll post them). She said the rain was coming down at 3+" per hour. Doesn't sound good. Good thing that they got all those reservoirs lowered. She said that there is no way in or out of poipu at the moment.

The island is saturated and the entrance into Coconut Marketplace is completely flooded. You can still drive thru but it looks like one big lake.
I was out earlier and drove over to Port Allen. A portion of 50 was closed between 540 and Port Allen. There was a mudslide just east of 540 and some pooling of water in the road.
They are forecasting even more rain tonight. I've been listening to the radio today and they have evacuated a few people near a reservoir that's used by the Kauai Coffee Company. I can't think of the name of the area.
Tree Tunnel is closed too. They've been telling people to stay off the roads unless necessary but I don't think the tourists are (me included).
We're just planning to go about a mile to Lemongrass for dinner.
It is indeed a serious situation here especially with the additional threat of rain.

Yes, we've still got rain, rain, rain today. Patches of sun could be seen offshore of Po`ipu at around 10a.m...but then came more rain.
My neighbor fears she's mildewing.
Life in paradise ain't always pretty -- NWS issued a new flash flood warning mid-morning, advising folks to stay indoors (and out of flood zones, obviously!). This rain is forecast to continue through Sunday, Monday...sigh...
Lives are not in peril, but everyone's suffering some level of inconvenience. Fielded phone calls while doing 4 hours on-air at KKCR again this morning. Island residents are, for the most part, quite resourceful and resilient -- and will get through this. I do, however, pity the visitors -- all that $$$ paid to get here, only to see rain, rain, rain.
And speaking of leptosporosis...all county parks, beach pavilions, and athletic fields are closed, and the state health dept has told everyone to avoid walking through standing water -- because of ag chemicals and you-know-what -- due to leaking and overflowing cesspools and septic tanks.
Eeeeeeeewwwwwwwww!!!

Thank you so much for the updates! I did talk to my folks today, and they're doing fine. Fortunately, they've been to Hawaii a couple of times before, so this isn't a once-in-a-lifetime trip washed out. They are, however, watching the reports closely, and might leave this weekend (a week earlier than planned). My dad is handicapped, so if they needed to do a fast evacuation it would be difficult. You islanders are in our thoughts and prayers!
