ESPN is right there. Not sure if they offer tours or not. Connecticut is a very small state. You could get from Lake Compounce to just about anywhere else in the state in under an hour, save for maybe the far northeast corner.
What do you want to do, how many are you and of what ages, and how much time will you have?

I would head up to Litchfield, it's very pretty, not much happening in Bristol/Waterbury area, it isn't exactly representative of the best CT has to offer.
Can you tell me which direction they're heading when they leave Bristol? I could make some suggestions in that direction.

I agree about Litchfield...also perhaps Mystic Sea Aquarium, Goodspeed Opera House for a show, or Ivoryton Playhouse.
Westport Country Playhouse is nice, about 1 hour from Bristol.
Nearby places: Barnes Nature Center, Shrub Rd Bristol...trails etc.
Indian Rock Nature Center Wolcott St Bristol...nice small farm
hike up Mt. Southington...free
Barnes Museum Rt 10 Southington...Historical building
Antique Car rally Rt 10 Southington
Imagine Nation Museum...Bristol
There are 2 or 3 malls close by.
after a day of rides, a 14 year old girl might love a shopping trip and maybe a movie.

The International Festival of Arts and Ideas opens this weekend in New Haven. It's a great experience, and the stuff on the New Haven green is free.

I agree about the New Haven International arts festival..and, how about a visit to IKEA in New Haven? (Cute fun things for a teen girl's room.)
Or, I would suggest heading down Rt 8 to the Merritt Parkway, and stopping off in Westport for a nice brunch, or the beach or maybe then head to NYC for site seeing, shopping, Rockefeller Plaza...lots of things. There is a Maritime Museum in Norwalk CT.
