We have a small "weekend" trailer at the lake. We had been renting various places over the years until we had the opportunity to buy a little place. The lake is lovely, good fishing, boating. There are many homes that are in "vacation rental programs" with area Realtors. You want to be ON the lake.... not much in the way of public access or parks. Off the lake there is not much to do;few restaurants, etc.
The area is growing though. A cute little town about 15-20 miles away is Warrenton. Antique shops, a few historic homes, couple of restaurants. We go thru there on the way to the lake and once in a while I can talk DH into stopping for lunch at the Hardware Cafe. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I'd want to stay on the lake itself.
There are several NC State Park access areas to the lake (well, there are signs from the interstate) and like most lakes, boating is popular on the weekends.
I don't know much about the Virginia side, but I think there is some type of state historic site near Clarksville, VA (though that could be Kerr Lake and not Lake Gaston).

My wife and I are empty nesters who moved to Lake Gaston from Greenville, NC in 1999. We also lived in Raleigh, NC and prior to that we grew up and married in Columbus, Ohio. After a tour in the Marine Corps and a career with Ohio Bell, Southern Bell and AT&T, the lifestyle at the lake was truly a blessing. What peace and quiet we have here!
The neighbors at the lake have a definite "Lake Attitude". By that I mean they are generally more laid back and pleasant to each other than in any community that we have lived in before. The spirit of neighborliness grows again in almost everyone who lives here, no matter how stressful their jobs or lifestyles had been before the lake. With my new found love for the community, I decided to become a real estate agent here so that I could help other people experience the same splendor I've come to enjoy at Lake Gaston. I strongly recommend coming here and as quickly as possible. Even if it's just for the day, the memory of this lake will last forever. Dan Banks
