CT - Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun Casino

Am planning a long weekend in December for my husbands birthday. Want to go to one of the Casinos in Southern CT.

I've done the research on both and am leaning towards Mohegan because it is a shorter drive (we live just outside of NYC).

Any comments based on personal experience would help. Thanks.

I'd absolutely choose Mohegan Sun over Foxwoods. It's just classier! The shops are better, the restaurants are better, and the entertainment venues seem very good, though I haven't been to one. Foxwoods was very disappointing as far as shops/food (I'm not a big gambler). On the other hand, the Museum at Foxwoods, which is a short distance from the casino area, is excellent and worth a visit. Have a great time.

Stop at Mohegan first. If you don't like it or want to change, drive 15 minutes to Foxwoods.

The casinos are only 10 miles apart. I went to both recently. The are both very large, and equally "fancy". Mohegan has more of an Indian theme, while Foxwoods had a town theme, I guess. I preferred Mohegan for some reason, though I can't tell you why.

We stayed at Foxwoods last year and we were not thrilled. The room was great, and the service at the hotel is good.
But the restaurant we went to was awful, forget the name,it was expensive and Italian, that is all I remember!
The casino is not much to write home about-very smokey-Bingo rooms were packed the next morning. We went home early.
Mohegan Sun is nicer, air is better, gambling is better, food is better.

The Casinos are close enough to loose money at both. Consider staying in Mystic.....quaint,good hotels and great B&B's. Also you could take the train to New London if you don't want to deal w/Rte 95 or weather.

I go to both frequently. Foxwoods has much better slots but since Mohegan has expanded it is much more exciting and the restaurants and shops are better. They are so close, if you can, try each one. It may depend on your preference. Valet parking used to be so much better at Mohegan but last night I spent a half hour waitng, which is more usual for Foxwoods on a Saturday nite. Self-parking in the garage is probably a better choice for both on a weekend.Todd English's Tuscany restaurant at Mohegan has a great atmosphere and food. Also, have a drink at Leffingwells bar in the new section where you feel like you are outside as the sky is always changing above you.It is really different.

I consult at both locations - it depends on what you want. Accomodations - definitely Foxwoods, where even Two Trees is a good room. Food - Foxwoods used to be OK if you knew what to stay away from, but since the expansion at Mohegan Sun, it's definitely MS. I believe the Italian at FW is called Al Dente. Generally that has been quite OK for me, the seafood place next door is supposed to be the best, but I can't eat seafood so don't know personally. Stay well away from the buffet as FW - quantity is all they reall have. Cedars steakhouse is well talked about, but honestly it's only OK food at a price that puts it at the highest at FW. Best place I've like there are both of their asian restaurants. The Deli and Veranda are OK for everyday stuff. At MS, eat where you like and it's almost always reasonable. Or better yet, if at FW, go on the road from 95 to the casino and eat everyday pizza and subs at Mystic Pizza II in Stonington.

For shopping it's easy - none of the above. Even if MS has finally gotten somewhere, both casinos are weak - stay at FW and shop in Mystic. There are several chain hotels, including suites, for good prices just off 95 at the Mystic exit - just north of the highway where Mystic is south.
