Yes, most of them are bigger because they have the kitchen area, etc. ANYTHING for just you, husband & child would be better than being crammed into a hotel room with the sister.
Here's another option - put your sister in the hotel room with your parents and you, husband & child take the other hotel room. That AT LEAST makes it 3 in each room instead of 4 & 2.
If I were you I'd be looking all over west Maui for some sort of hotel/condo/cottage option for myself & family to avoid the disaster waiting to happen if you all share one hotel room...ABSOLUTELY NO PRIVACY. I'd rather stay home.
You might need to get in touch with some sort of agent over there that handles rentals to find one in that time period. It will probably be difficult but not impossible. Good luck

I was going to try not to say anything else, but really....book something now and sort out the details later. Because, if you don't, even the little studio condos won't be available - or will be more expensive.

If your pushy sister is anything like my pushy sister, then the fact that she's paying for the rooms, so to speak, would "entitle" her [in her mind] to dominate our plans. It sounds like your sister is already doing that to you. I cannot imagine a more hellish vacation. I would not go if I could not at least stay in a separate room, but honestly, I would have already made separate reservations so as NOT to be in her room. And my kids would protest having to room with Aunt so-in-so. I wish you luck with this. It can be tough when family and emotions enter into travel planning and the trip itself.

I just went on http://www.vrbo.com/28699 and this one is available for your time period and looks very nice. Just go to the website and see it. I checked their calendar and it shows availability for your dates. I'd jump on it if I were you. I've usde vrbo many times with no problems. You are basically renting from the owner...no middle agent involved. In case the link above doesn't work go to vrbo.com and enter this number and the unit will pop up.

Oh believe me. I took all your advice and booked a room at the Westin. Hate the price, but you only live once. Plus, if I decide to opt out it only costs $25. So I am still looking for a condo nearby. Thanks all. I'll keep you posted!

We had one minor "blow-up". I stayed calm and stated my thoughts. She walked away to cool off. When she returned, we listened to music and just didn't revisit the issue. Sounds so simple. It was HUGE!!! Celebrate your 50th with your sister in Hawaii as a peer - not as a "little" sister. It CAN be done

I have to agree with the others who say Get Your Own Room!!!!! Doesn't matter how well you love or get along with your family - you're going to be in paradise, don't ruin it. I have family who often shares rooms with other family members to save money and it usually works OK for them, but I've always made a rule when traveling with others - no room sharing. Not sure where you're coming from, but obviously you'll be spending a bit of $ to get there, eat, play etc. Why ruin it by being cramped into a single room and more importantly - a single bathroom.
Wasn't sure if your parents and sister were in the room. Can't possibly mean 6 sharing the room can you? Fire laws may even prohibit that, but not sure.

I see you booked your own room, I got off on a tangent about not sharing - sorry about that. Anyway what I meant to say was have you checked availability at the Resort Quest Kaanapali shores. They have studios and one bedrooms that would be perfect for the three of you and prices are usually fair though I didn't check your dates. I know literally dozens of people who have stayed there and thought it worked out great.

Tried the Resort Quest and they only have studio condos left. I was trying to figure out if they had more room than the resort (I am thinking so). They are certainly far less expensive. So, does that mean you get what you pay for or are the resorts extremely overpriced?

Studio condos are almost always larger than hotel rooms. Condos are less than resorts - well, for a lot of reasons, but mainly because they have fewer costly amenities than the resort. A "normal" pool vs. a super pool with waterslide, lazy river, etc. Often, they are are not waterfront but will have water views. It costs a lot to run all the amenities of a hotel resort (including staff) and condo complexes don't have that overhead.

kithsu, did you look at the condos I found for you on vrbo? If money is a concern they are much less expensive than your resort for $3220 for 7 nights...that's $460/night yikes!

Yes, resorts are usually lots more $ for the reasons starsville noted, but sometimes you're paying a lot extra for things you really don't need (or won't take the time to use). I think the Resort Quest I suggested will have everything you need and leave you money to enjoy other things while on-island. It's on the beach. Just a note though, not sure if this is the case will all the resorts, but you will have to pay a daily fee for parking so be sure to keep that in mind when figuring out costs.

I can't believe your sister is not giving you and your family a room by yourselves as a birthday present. She is even getting your parents a room with her points!

I think it's great you found something in another hotel...but why couldn't your sister stay in your parent's room and make it 3 people in each room?

That's a very good point. It's amazing how people give the illusion of generosity - maybe it is to make them feel good about themselves and to heck with anybody else! Thanks for pointing that out.
