Cool/trendy bars in Boston for 25-30 year olds
I am not cool, trendy or a 20 something; nor do I generally go to bars - but starting to put together itinerary for daughter and 3 friends for this summer. Looking for someplace a little interesting, but not impossible-to-talk loud or crowded. Music not necessary. We might be with them, so if they only let cool/trendy people in, it would not work.

I'm not cool, trendy or 20something either. But a few thoughts...
Drink over in the waterfront/fort point area is very popular and has great cocktails. I'm a big fan of the Hawthorne in Kenmore Square. It's kind of cozy, and also has great bartending. Drinks are a bit pricy. The bar at Eastern Standard, just next door, is also outstanding.
If beer is more their thing than cocktails, there's Lord Hobo in Cambridge. And I've heard good things about the Druid in Cambridge, which is an Irish pub with traditional music.

Like china_cat, I think there is a kind of grid that emerges here:
Cocktail crowd or beer crowd?
Music or chat?
Stay calm, Mom, but miniskirts and cleavage or casual?
Music is a choice between folk/ethnic (Davis Square or Allston)
Rock (Allston)
Clubs (Lansdowne Street, Broad Street/Quincy Market)
Last time I was by the W Hotel in the Theatre District, it was packed ith 20-30 somethings. Cocktail oriented, chat possible. Dressy.
In the summer, Tia's at the Marriott Long Wharf is the great young professional after work place to meet, but I don't know the winter equivalent.
Pick up a copy of Improper Bostonian, and it will cover them all.

we were near the W one night last winter. It was, as Ackislander says, very full of fashionable young people. I actually was afraid they would not let me in, as my heels were not nearly high enough or spikey enough for admission. We did not choose to wait on line to get in, so it did not come up.
