Comments on Kingwood Resort?
I'm just wondering if anyone has any experiences to share about Kingwood Resort in North Georgia. In your opinion, is it a good place for families with kids (mine are 12 and 8)? Thanks!

Well, it was an older resort that kind of died down and then a couple of years ago they started pumping new money in it (new owner) and there's a lot of new construction going on there. I can ask around but let me know what you need to know. They have started promoting the resort and do a lot of weddings there. Beautiful location.
If you are looking for a resort with lots of things to do on site, I think the pool and golf course are about the only options. If you are looking for a nice place to stay while you enjoy the surrounding area, I would say "yes", it's good for your 8 and 12 year old.
It's near the Chattoga River (whitewater rafting), there are lots of hikes and waterfalls in Rabun County, horseback riding, and three beautiful mountatin lakes as well. If you visit the area, you could rent a boat for the afternoon or day and go out on Lake Burton. There are only small swimming "beaches" - one each on Lake Burton and Lake Rabun.
This area has historically been a great mountain getaway location. The county's motto is "Where spring spends the summer" and it is usually 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Atlanta and the rest of the state. Most of the residences and vacation homes don't have air-conditioning, because you don't need it.
Sorry for not responding earlier. I honestly didn't think the question was about the Kingswood in Georgia until I clicked on it today!

I suppose you have seen the website, but just in case - http://www.kingwood-resort.com/109.0.html
The rooms and condos look very nice.
I called a local to ask about the kids questions. The indoor pool is "kinda cool" according to the 8 and 6 year olds. The mom doesn't know about the outdoor pool - she thinks it must be at the condos.
I was surprised that the website suggests they have horseback riding. I enjoyed the "river ride" from the stables at the Dillard House. Most of the ride is along the river, but then the horses actually walk in the middle of the river - very cool (literally and figuratively). Then of course you could pig out at the Dillard House afterward.
There are links to the whitewater rafting, etc. I was surprised to learn about the ropes course run by the river company. I may want to check that out.
My contact confirmed it's mostly a golf resort - not really a whole lot for kids to do on site. But it would be a nice place to stay in the area while you enjoyed the surrounding adventures!
There are a couple of books about waterfalls, hiking, etc. in Rabun County. The Georgia library system has them in circulation. You may want to check them out for more ideas. The Chamber of Commerce sells a nice little map for $1 that shows hiking trails and waterfalls in the area.
If you head that way, let me know and I can give you some recommendations.

Rosebud,,I don't have any idea about Kingwood Resort, but I cannot imagine a place in Georgia with no ac. Makes me hot just to think about it.
I recently went to Big Canoe for a weekend with the girls and it was great. Check it out...bigcanoe.com...gated community with lots to do on/and around the area. There were lots of families there with children.

iceeu2, Sorry for any confusion. Kingwood definitely has air conditioning.
I was only referring to how cool it is in Rabun County. Every chair in my place in the mountains has a throw on the back of it for use even in the daytime. I keep a ready supply of sweatshirts for visitors from Atlanta who really didn't believe me when I suggested they bring a sweater in the summer. In fact, I am sitting right now in the 3rd story loft (heat rises) with a fleece throw over my lap and feet. My realtor looked at me like I was crazy when I asked about air conditioning...and now I know why.
